‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Presales Just Smashed Past $55 Million, and It’s Only Getting Started

Marvel Studios has spent the past few years navigating a rockier stretch than the franchise saw during its peak, with uneven box office results and rising production costs putting real pressure on the studio to deliver another genuine cultural event. After years of mixed reception for some of its recent releases, Marvel badly needed a win that reminded audiences why the Avengers brand became such a phenomenon in the first place.

Early signs suggest that moment may finally be arriving. With December’s release still months away, ticket buyers have already started lining up in numbers that rival some of the biggest openings in box office history.

‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has now crossed $55,000,000 in domestic pre-sales, with three full months still remaining before its December 18 release date. That figure places the film among the biggest pre-release sales performances ever recorded in the United States, trailing only two other titles on the all-time list.

According to the current rankings, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ holds the top spot with $150,000,000 in pre-release sales from earlier this year, followed by ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $130,000,000 back in 2019. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ rounds out the top three with $78,000,000 from its 2021 release, putting ‘Doomsday’ within striking distance of climbing even higher on that list before its actual premiere.

What makes the pace of these sales particularly notable is how quickly they’ve accumulated. Tickets for ‘Doomsday’ only went on sale July 20, meaning the film has pulled in more than $50,000,000 in roughly seven weeks alone, an unusually fast climb for a title still three months from release.

Disney Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston addressed the milestone directly earlier this month at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference. “We’re three months out from the movie, and we already have $50 million of pre-sales, literally three months out. So there is a ton of thirst and excitement within that fan base to see another Avengers movie,” Johnston said at the conference.

A significant portion of that demand appears tied to premium viewing formats specifically. More than 70% of the film’s pre-sales, roughly $35,000,000 worth, have gone toward Infinity Vision tickets, Disney’s newly unveiled certification for premium large-format theaters featuring laser projection and immersive sound setups.

That premium-format push carries extra significance given the competitive landscape ‘Doomsday’ is stepping into. The film opens the same day as Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which will hold the domestic IMAX screens during that release window, meaning ‘Doomsday’ won’t screen in IMAX format at any theater during its opening weekend.

Much of the excitement driving these numbers can likely be traced back to the film’s sprawling ensemble cast, which brings together characters from across multiple corners of the franchise. ‘Doomsday’ marks the official MCU debut for several of Fox’s former ‘X-Men’ stars, including Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.

The film also folds in the cast of ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, alongside the ‘Thunderbolts’ lineup featuring Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Lewis Pullman, Wyatt Russell, and Hannah John-Kamen. With directors Anthony and Joe Russo returning to steer the franchise once again, expectations for the film’s scale and ambition remain enormous.

With nearly 100 days still remaining before release, there’s plenty of room for these numbers to keep climbing or level off as the marketing cycle continues. Still, a $55,000,000 head start at this stage puts ‘Doomsday’ in rare company among the biggest theatrical events in recent memory.

Given the film’s massive ensemble and the returning Russo brothers behind the camera, it’s clear audiences view this as far more than just another sequel in an increasingly crowded franchise landscape.
