‘Resident Evil’ Producer Roy Lee Is Reportedly Behind a New ‘Silent Hill’ Revival

Horror video game adaptations have had a rocky reputation on the big screen for years, with plenty of attempts falling flat despite passionate source material and dedicated fanbases. That perception took a genuine hit this month, though, thanks to one filmmaker’s approach proving audiences and critics alike were hungry for something different.

Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ arrived to both strong reviews and impressive box office numbers, seemingly cracking a code that had eluded the genre for years by prioritizing tension and atmosphere over strict lore adherence. That success has clearly opened doors, with the producer behind the film now reportedly setting his sights on another beloved horror franchise.

Roy Lee, one of the producers behind ‘Resident Evil’s’ $108,300,000 opening, is now involved with a fresh start for the ‘Silent Hill’ film series, according to a new profile in The Wall Street Journal. Details on the project remain sparse, with it currently unclear whether it’s being developed as a feature film or a television series, and how far along development has progressed.

According to the same profile, Lee’s connection to ‘Resident Evil’ started while he was working on Cregger’s earlier film ‘Barbarian,’ when he simply asked the director which video game he’d want to adapt if given the chance. Cregger chose ‘Resident Evil,’ and Lee subsequently secured the rights, assembled the project, and eventually sold it to Sony following competition among interested studios.

That level of direct collaboration between producer and filmmaker helped fuel much of what made ‘Resident Evil’ resonate so strongly with audiences, giving Cregger the creative freedom to pursue his specific vision for the material. If a similar approach carries over to ‘Silent Hill,’ it could bode well for finding a filmmaker equally passionate about that franchise’s specific tone and atmosphere.

Beyond his work on ‘Resident Evil,’ Lee’s producing credits include a notable run of horror successes, including ‘The Ring,’ ‘The Grudge,’ and ‘It.’ That track record gives him significant credibility heading into a new attempt at bringing ‘Silent Hill’ back to screens, especially given how inconsistent the franchise’s previous cinematic outings have been.

With no director or additional cast currently attached to the new project, this latest ‘Silent Hill’ effort is still in its earliest stages. Still, having a producer with Lee’s specific horror pedigree involved gives the reboot a promising foundation before any other creative details have even been confirmed.

‘Silent Hill’ has had a mixed track record in film, spanning the original 2006 movie starring Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean, its 2012 sequel, and this year’s ‘Return to Silent Hill,’ directed by Christophe Gans and starring Jeremy Irvine. That most recent installment, an adaptation of ‘Silent Hill 2,’ grossed $47,500,000 worldwide against a $23,000,000 budget after receiving largely negative reviews from critics.

Across all three films in the series, the franchise has generated a combined $203,800,000 at the box office against $93,000,000 in total budgets, reflecting a series that’s never quite managed to translate its beloved source material into consistent critical or commercial success. That history makes Lee’s involvement feel especially significant, given how badly the franchise could use the kind of reinvention ‘Resident Evil’ just received.

Beyond film, the ‘Silent Hill’ franchise remains active on the gaming side as well, with ‘Silent Hill: Townfall’ set to launch September 24 for PlayStation 5 and PC. That continued investment from Konami in the franchise’s gaming output suggests the broader ‘Silent Hill’ brand remains commercially viable, even as its film adaptations have struggled to find consistent footing.

Given how much momentum ‘Resident Evil’ has generated for video game adaptations more broadly, Lee’s involvement in a new ‘Silent Hill’ project arrives at what could be an ideal moment for the franchise’s cinematic future.
