‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Latveria Map Reveals Doctor Doom’s Kingdom, From Doomstadt to Doomwood Forest

Latveria has become one of the most talked-about places in the marketing for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘. In the comics, the small Eastern European country is the home of Doctor Doom, who rules it as monarch. It first appeared in ‘Fantastic Four Annual’ #2 in 1964, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and has been tied to Doom ever since.

Until recently, the MCU had barely touched it. ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ only established that Latveria exists on Earth-828, and its absence was felt in a subtle way: Latveria’s seat sat empty at Sue Storm’s Future Foundation gathering. An in-universe promo poster later showed a first look at Earth-828’s Latveria, with Castle Doom looming over the city, airships overhead and closed borders.

Then came a new Jeep commercial that followed Steve Rogers, The Thing and Johnny Storm through portals before ending in a snowy, mountainous Latveria. It briefly showed the Doomstadt Tower rising behind Doom’s castle. Now a detailed Latveria map is circulating online, and it is the most complete picture yet of the kingdom, though its exact origin hasn’t been confirmed.

The map is drawn in a dark, parchment-style design, with “Latveria” written across the top in gothic lettering and a green flag at its center. A starred Doomstadt sits in the south, marked with a hooded figure that looks like Doom himself. Castle Von Doom is drawn just beside it.

Around the capital, the map is crowded with locations. Doomwood Forest fills the western side with green trees, while Mt. Victorum rises in the north with a river running down from its peaks. Doom Falls, Doomsburg and Doomton are dotted along the waterways, and the Citadel of Doom appears near the forest.

There are a few quieter details too. The Lanzarini Temple and the Werner Academy are both marked on the map, along with a mountain named something like Mt. Sorcista. Many of these names line up with places from the Marvel Comics version of Latveria, which suggests the filmmakers are leaning on the source material.

The map is only the latest piece in a very deliberate rollout. The Jeep commercial carries the words “Assembling Soon” beneath the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ logo; it shows the spot as the first look at Latveria in the MCU. Fans also noticed that the jagged mountains in the ad resemble the ones that surround the country in the comics.

An official Marvel book, ‘From Endgame to Doomsday: A Marvel Studios Visual Dictionary’, adds more context. It describes Doom as Latveria’s mysterious and enigmatic monarch, a master of both sorcery and technology whose intellect rivals Reed Richards’. It also mentions that Latveria is conspicuously absent from Sue Storm’s Future Foundation gatherings.

The book also gave fans a first look at Doom’s Book of Spells. Its secrets reportedly grant him enormous power, though no official details have been shared.

Rumors have claimed that a lot of the movie takes place in Latveria, but Marvel has not confirmed that. A reported slip from a composer also suggested that Doomstadt will feature in the film, though that post was deleted and nothing official has followed.

The marketing keeps pointing in that direction anyway. Promo art has shown Doom surrounded by his Latverian Witches, and Marvel put out a stop-motion video that gave viewers a guided tour of the country.

Even real-world cities are getting in on the fun. In August, the Bavarian city of Memmingen invited Marvel to host the film’s premiere, saying an image of its market square and town hall had been used in the depiction of Doomstadt.

For now, the map is a tantalizing hint at how the Russo brothers may bring Doom’s kingdom to life. The film brings the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men together against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, and it opens in theaters December 18.

With so much marketing built around the country, fans can expect the full picture of Latveria very soon.
