‘Street Fighter’ Star Callina Liang Was Just Spotted in Tokyo, and It Might Be Tied to Her Biggest Career Move Yet

Sometimes the most telling glimpse into a rising star’s trajectory comes not from a red carpet appearance, but from a candid photo caught somewhere unexpected. That’s exactly the kind of moment fans got this week when new images of actress Callina Liang began circulating online, showing her out on the streets of Tokyo. For an actress whose profile has grown rapidly over the past year, the timing of these photos feels far from coincidental.

Liang has spent the last several months becoming one of the most closely watched names in genre filmmaking, largely thanks to a single casting announcement that reshaped her career overnight. What started as a breakout performance in an acclaimed indie thriller has since snowballed into one of the year’s most anticipated blockbuster roles.

That role is Chun-Li in Legendary’s long-awaited live-action ‘Street Fighter’ reboot, a casting decision first reported by Deadline back in mid-2025. Liang, previously known for starring in Steven Soderbergh’s supernatural thriller ‘Presence’ opposite Lucy Liu, stepped into the role of one of gaming’s most iconic characters, a skilled martial artist and Interpol officer who first appeared in ‘Street Fighter II’ in 1991.

The new ‘Street Fighter’ film marks the franchise’s return to live-action more than three decades after the 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Ming-Na Wen, who originated the role of Chun-Li on screen. Directed by Kitao Sakurai, this version is set in 1993 and follows Chun-Li as she recruits estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters for the World Warrior Tournament, only to be pulled into a much larger conspiracy. Liang stars alongside Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, and David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, with a sprawling supporting cast that includes Jason Momoa, Cody Rhodes, and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson rounding out the roster of fighters.

Liang has been notably candid about just how physically demanding the role became during production. She has said she ate a dozen eggs a day while training and spent two hours daily practicing Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Wushu to prepare for the part, adding that by the end of filming, each of her thighs had grown by 6.5 centimeters. She also studied slow-motion footage of Chun-Li’s in-game movements to make sure the character’s fighting style felt authentic rather than simply stylized for the camera.

That level of dedication has already started paying off in terms of buzz. Just days before these new photos surfaced, the film’s cast, including Liang, Momoa, Centineo, and Koji, appeared at a special screening event in Japan alongside director Kitao Sakurai and game director Takayuki Nakayama, celebrating the franchise’s roots in a country where ‘Street Fighter’ remains a cultural touchstone. To mark the occasion, the studio also released the first full-length, playable movie trailer, which showed off recreations of several iconic in-game fight moves.

Given that recent Japan-based promotional push, Liang being spotted out in Tokyo tracks closely with the film’s ongoing press momentum heading into its release. With ‘Street Fighter’ now scheduled to hit theaters and IMAX screens on October 16, the timing suggests these candid sightings are likely just another piece of a much larger rollout designed to keep Chun-Li, and the actress bringing her to life, firmly in the cultural conversation.

Between the physical transformation, the international promotional tour, and mounting fan anticipation, Liang’s path toward this role has clearly been anything but easy. With just weeks to go before ‘Street Fighter’ finally hits theaters, all signs point to her Tokyo appearance being one more beat in an increasingly high-profile lead-up.
