Corporate media consolidation rarely generates headlines as attention-grabbing as this one. Just days after clearing a major antitrust hurdle in its historic acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount finds itself at the center of a new story that has nothing to do with regulators and everything to do with one of the most polarizing figures in business.

According to a new report from Semafor, Paramount executives have discussed asking Elon Musk to become part of a syndicate of equity investors backing the company’s roughly $110 billion purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery. The conversations are reportedly still in early, exploratory stages, with no disclosed deal size or timeline attached to the discussions so far.

The rationale behind the potential move centers largely on easing the financial burden currently carried by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, who has served as the guaranteeing force behind Paramount’s mega-deal financing. Bringing in additional equity investors like Musk would help diversify the company’s investor base while reducing how much of that load falls on Ellison alone, whose son David Ellison serves as Paramount’s CEO.

The connection between Musk and the Ellison family runs deeper than simple business convenience. Larry Ellison notably invested $1 billion into Musk’s 2022 acquisition of Twitter, the platform now rebranded as X, giving this potential arrangement a sense of reciprocity between two of the tech industry’s most prominent billionaires. Asking Musk to return that support by joining Paramount’s investor roster would follow a pattern the two have established before.

An investment from Musk would represent a meaningful vote of confidence in the newly combined Paramount Warner Bros. from a businessman who commands an unusually devoted following among retail investors. According to Semafor, it’s considered unlikely that Musk would have any formal input over the company’s day-to-day operations even if the investment moves forward.

The bigger complication isn’t financial but political. Semafor’s reporting notes that Musk’s involvement, even as a minority investor, carries real political risk given that the combined Paramount Warner Bros. would own both CNN and CBS. Musk’s control of X and his broader political influence were already sources of concern among Democrats during the 2024 election cycle, and even partial ownership stakes in two of the country’s most prominent news organizations would likely draw significant scrutiny in Washington.

That tension underscores just how unusual this potential arrangement would be. Musk has never shied away from wielding influence over media platforms he’s acquired, and his history with Twitter, marked by public negotiation, an attempted withdrawal from the deal, and eventual litigation before the acquisition closed, adds a layer of unpredictability that any equity arrangement involving him would likely carry. Paramount reportedly declined to comment on the discussions when approached by Semafor, and Musk did not respond to requests for comment either.

This potential investment discussion arrives just as Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery clears its final major hurdles. The deal, valued between $110 and $111 billion, ranks among the largest media transactions in history, and its completion has already reshaped the streaming landscape by combining HBO Max and Paramount+ under one corporate roof. With the merger now expected to close within weeks following a settlement with state attorneys general, attention is increasingly turning toward exactly who will be funding and shaping the newly combined media giant going forward.

Whether or not Musk ultimately joins the investor syndicate, the mere possibility highlights just how intertwined Silicon Valley’s biggest personalities have become with legacy media ownership. Given the scale of the deal and the sensitivities surrounding CNN and CBS specifically, any formal confirmation of Musk’s involvement would almost certainly reignite political debate over how much influence tech billionaires should hold over major news organizations.
