Fans Are Campaigning for Lou Ferrigno to Return as Marvel’s Most Evil Hulk Yet

Few actors carry quite the same nostalgic weight for comic book fans as Lou Ferrigno, whose name has been synonymous with the Hulk since long before Marvel Studios turned the character into a modern cinematic icon. Now, with Marvel’s next major Avengers crossover on the horizon, a new wave of fan speculation has emerged pushing for Ferrigno to make an unlikely return to the role that first defined his career.

That speculation centers on Maestro, one of the darkest and most dangerous versions of the Hulk ever created, and whether Ferrigno might be the actor to finally bring him to life on screen. Fans have been vocal in campaigning for the casting choice, framing it as a fitting full-circle moment for an actor whose connection to the character stretches back nearly five decades.

The push comes as Marvel Studios is reportedly searching for an actor to play Maestro in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ according to a rumor from scooper James Mack, who claimed the studio is “actively looking for an actor to play Maestro in ‘AVENGERS: SECRET WARS.'” Maestro is an alternate-future version of Bruce Banner from Marvel Comics lore, designated Earth-9200, who abandons any moral restraint and rules a post-apocalyptic wasteland with brutal cunning rather than the conflicted heroism typically associated with the character.

Created by writer Peter David and artist George Pérez, Maestro first appeared in ‘The Incredible Hulk: Future Imperfect’ #1 back in December 1992, quickly becoming one of the character’s most memorable comic book adversaries. Described as a fusion of Banner’s genius-level intellect with the Hulk’s raw, unrestrained power, Maestro has previously appeared in animated projects and video games, including a voice performance from Fred Tatasciore in ‘Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.,’ but has never made a live-action appearance until now.

That potential live-action debut has fueled plenty of speculation about who might take on the role, with Ferrigno’s name emerging as a particularly popular fan pick given his history originating the character on screen in the late 1970s and early 1980s CBS series ‘The Incredible Hulk.’ He isn’t the only name being floated for the part, either; actor Matthew McConaughey has previously expressed his own interest in playing a version of the Hulk, with fans and outlets alike speculating he could be a fit for Maestro specifically.

Complicating the casting picture further is the ongoing uncertainty around Mark Ruffalo’s own involvement in the upcoming Avengers films. While Ruffalo has publicly stated he won’t appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ industry reports suggest he could return as the mainline Bruce Banner in ‘Secret Wars’ instead, with separate rumors claiming multiple Hulk variants, potentially including Maestro, could appear across the two films. None of these reports, including Ruffalo’s involvement or any specific casting for Maestro, have been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios.

Given how unconfirmed and fluid the entire situation remains, fans have largely embraced the Ferrigno campaign as wishful thinking rather than genuine insider knowledge, though that hasn’t dampened enthusiasm for the idea. The symbolic weight of bringing the original on-screen Hulk back as the character’s darkest possible version has clearly resonated with longtime fans eager to see decades of Hulk history collide in a single multiversal crossover.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to arrive first on December 18, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027, there’s still plenty of time for official casting news to emerge one way or another. Until then, fans will keep making their case for exactly who should bring Maestro to life.
