Alexander Ludwig Says ‘The White Lotus’ Season 4 Is the Show’s Wildest Chapter Yet
‘The White Lotus‘ has built its reputation on turning luxury vacations into slow-burning disasters, with each new season somehow finding fresh ways to top the chaos that came before. Creator Mike White has made a habit of keeping plot details locked down tight, letting fan speculation run wild in the months before each premiere.
That secrecy has only intensified as the show heads into new territory for its fourth installment, trading its usual island resort setting for the glamour and pressure of the Cannes Film Festival. With production already underway in France, cast members have started offering small glimpses of what to expect, even while sworn to keep the biggest twists under wraps.
One of those cast members isn’t holding back much when it comes to describing the overall tone. Alexander Ludwig, speaking from the set in France, told Variety the new season is the most “extravagant” chapter of the anthology series yet. “It’s fucking wild,” he said, describing the scale of what’s coming.
That kind of buildup carries real weight given the show’s track record. Season 3 delivered one of its most talked-about moments yet, an incestuous scene between Patrick Schwarzenegger and Sam Nivola’s characters that dominated conversation for weeks after it aired.
Ludwig addressed that infamous scene directly when asked whether Season 4 might attempt something similarly shocking. “My first question to Mike was, ‘Who am I doing that to?'” Ludwig said, laughing. “Obviously joking, but I was like, ‘Just tell me.’ [I’ll do it] happily.”
The exchange highlights just how much trust the cast has placed in White’s willingness to push boundaries each season, even without knowing specifics ahead of time. Given how central shock value has become to the show’s identity, Ludwig’s willingness to sign on for whatever comes next says plenty about the creative relationship on set.
Ludwig also touched on the surreal experience of filming at Cannes itself, calling it a rare kind of full-circle moment. “The only thing cooler than having a film premiere at Cannes Film Festival is shooting ‘The White Lotus’ at the Cannes Film Festival,” he said, describing an encounter with George Clooney who reportedly tried to pry details out of him. Ludwig kept things close to the vest, telling the actor he’d “have to wait like everyone else.”
Ludwig and AJ Michalka were the first actors confirmed for the new season, which has since grown into one of the show’s largest ensembles yet. The cast includes Steve Coogan, Max Greenfield, Kumail Nanjiani, Vincent Cassel, Laura Dern, Ben Kingsley, Sandra Bernhard and Chris Messina, among several others.
While Mike White and HBO haven’t officially confirmed plot specifics, Variety has previously reported that the season follows two rival filmmaking teams competing for the top prize at Cannes, with one camped out at a flashy hotel on the Croisette and the other staying at a more secluded hilltop retreat. Production has been spotted filming around Paris, Monaco and the festival’s famed Palais des Festivals.
The shift away from the show’s usual tropical backdrop marks a deliberate change in direction for White, who previously said he wanted to move beyond the “crashing waves on rocks” imagery that defined the first three seasons. Based on Ludwig’s comments, that shift in scenery hasn’t come with any less drama, if anything, quite the opposite.
With filming still underway and details being closely guarded, fans will likely be speculating for months about exactly what Ludwig meant by “wild.”
