Marvel Studios’ strategy of pairing ‘Avengers: Endgame’s‘ theatrical return with fresh footage from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already proven to be a savvy marketing play domestically, but the real test of the film’s box office ambitions was always going to come from overseas audiences. With the re-release rolling out across dozens of international markets simultaneously, early signs suggest the strategy is paying off on a global scale.

‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ opened to more than 18 million dollars on its first international Friday, according to figures shared by box office analyst Jatinder Singh, bringing its cumulative overseas total to roughly 28 million dollars so far. That performance builds directly on presale momentum that had been building across multiple territories in the days leading up to release.

Singh’s tracking data described the international rollout as solid across the board, with particularly strong results in the UK, Latin America, India, China and select European markets. Overseas opening totals are now expected to reach 60 million dollars, with a global weekend haul potentially climbing past 85 million dollars once every market is fully accounted for.

Among individual territories, China led the way with an estimated 7 million dollars, continuing the country’s status as one of the franchise’s strongest historical markets outside North America. Mexico followed with approximately 1.8 million dollars, while the UK contributed 1.7 million dollars to the overall international haul.

Japan and Italy rounded out the next tier with 1.5 million dollars and 1.2 million dollars respectively, while both India and France each brought in roughly 1 million dollars during the opening push. That kind of broad-based strength across such a wide range of markets reflects the re-release’s ability to draw audiences well beyond its core North American fan base.

China’s performance is especially notable given how the rollout unfolded there. The market started with fewer than 100 screenings during the film’s first two weeks before dramatically expanding to 11,000 and eventually 20,000 screenings in the days ahead of release, a scaling pattern that helped fuel presale momentum heading into opening weekend.

With updates continuing to roll in from the film’s original 2019 run being folded into current tracking, industry estimates now put ‘Endgame’s’ cumulative worldwide total near 2.9 billion dollars by the end of the weekend. That figure would put the film within striking distance of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar,’ which currently holds the all-time global box office crown at approximately 2.92 billion dollars.

The gap between the two films has been narrowing steadily since ‘Endgame Encore’ began its theatrical run, driven by both the four minutes of new footage tying directly into ‘Doomsday’ and a marketing push built around exclusive previews of the December crossover film. Whether ‘Endgame’ can fully close that remaining distance will likely come down to how well the re-release holds across subsequent weekends, both domestically and internationally.

For a film originally released more than seven years ago, reigniting this level of box office competition speaks to just how much cultural weight the Marvel brand still carries heading into one of its biggest crossover events yet.
