‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Closes In on Historic $950 Million Milestone

Tom Holland’s latest outing as Spider-Man has spent the better part of two months rewriting the box office record book, and its remarkable staying power shows no signs of slowing down even as the film approaches its tenth week in theaters. What began as a record-shattering opening weekend back in the summer has since evolved into one of the most durable theatrical runs in modern box office history.

That durability has already delivered one landmark moment for the franchise. After surpassing ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office earlier this month, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has continued adding to that total week after week, showing minimal signs of the steep declines typical of even the biggest blockbusters.

That momentum is now pointing toward another historic threshold. According to box office analyst Luiz Fernando, the film grossed 1 million dollars on its ninth Friday in theaters, a modest single-day figure that nonetheless reflects only a 34.6% drop from the previous weekend, despite losing another 608 theaters overnight. That kind of retention has pushed the film’s domestic cume to 947.6 million dollars, putting it within striking distance of becoming the first film in history to cross 950 million dollars at the U.S. box office.

Fernando is now projecting a three-day weekend total between 3.5 million dollars and 4 million dollars for the film’s ninth frame, numbers that would be enough to push ‘Brand New Day’ past that unprecedented milestone as early as this weekend.

‘Brand New Day’s’ record-setting trajectory was evident from its very first day in theaters. The film opened to 72 million dollars in Thursday preview screenings alone, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ previous record of 60 million dollars for the biggest Thursday preview total of all time. Its Friday performance followed suit, topping ‘Endgame’s’ single-day record of 157.46 million dollars and immediately landing among the year’s top ten domestic grossers on release day alone.

That opening weekend ultimately delivered Sony’s biggest launch ever, alongside the second-highest Saturday gross in box office history. The film earned a 98% audience score and an A CinemaScore from opening night crowds, reflecting overwhelmingly positive reception despite a slightly more mixed 90% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, still a strong result by any measure.

The film’s dominance hasn’t been limited to North America. ‘Brand New Day’ has already crossed 2.4 billion dollars worldwide, placing it among just eight films in history to clear the 2 billion dollar threshold globally and positioning it as the third highest-grossing film ever, trailing only ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Sony’s own social media team celebrated the film’s earlier domestic milestone directly, with a statement posted to the official Instagram account reading, “Doesn’t get bigger than this. Thank you to the fans for helping #SpiderManBrandNewDay make cinematic history — it’s now the highest-grossing domestic release of ALL TIME at the North American box office.”
