Marvel Just Crossed $35 Billion at the Box Office, and No Franchise Has Ever Come Close
Superhero movies have dominated the box office conversation for well over a decade now, but even by that standard, one franchise has operated in an entirely different universe of success. What started as a modest gamble on a lesser-known character back in 2008 has since become the single biggest force in modern moviemaking.
That gamble, of course, was ‘Iron Man,’ the film that quietly launched what would become an unprecedented run of interconnected blockbusters under Kevin Feige’s guidance. Few could have predicted just how massive that shared universe would eventually grow, both in scale and in sheer financial dominance.
That dominance has now reached a new milestone, with Marvel Studios’ 38 theatrical releases collectively grossing $35 billion worldwide, cementing the franchise as the most successful in movie history. It’s a figure no other cinematic universe has come remotely close to matching.
This latest total builds on a run of records the studio has been racking up for years, including 10 films that have each crossed $1 billion globally and two, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ that surpassed $2 billion. Marvel previously crossed the $30 billion threshold back in 2024 following the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ becoming the first film franchise ever to reach that number.
To put the scale of that achievement in perspective, the next closest competitor, ‘Star Wars,’ still trails Marvel by tens of billions of dollars in worldwide box office. Meanwhile, franchises like ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Spider-Man’ as standalone series sit even further behind, each landing under $10 billion in total lifetime grosses.
Even franchises built around massive individual installments, like the ‘Avengers’ subset of films, have needed only a handful of movies to crack $7 billion, a reminder of just how much of Marvel’s overall total comes from crossover events rather than standalone character films. That structure has become one of the defining traits separating Marvel’s box office model from virtually every other franchise in Hollywood.
This new $35 billion milestone also arrives during a particularly active stretch for the franchise. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already emerged as one of the year’s biggest global releases, while ‘Avengers: Endgame’ recently returned to theaters as ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ pulling in strong numbers during its limited re-release run.
Both of those releases are helping build anticipation ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which is expected to reunite much of the franchise’s ensemble cast later this year. Given how much box office momentum Marvel has generated throughout 2026 alone, the studio’s next major crossover event carries serious weight heading into its release.
It’s a reminder that even after nearly two decades and dozens of films, audiences still haven’t tired of returning to this particular universe again and again. Whether that continued enthusiasm can carry the franchise toward an even more staggering total in the years ahead remains one of the more fascinating storylines in modern Hollywood.
For a franchise built on interconnected storytelling across dozens of films, hitting $35 billion isn’t just a box office statistic, it’s proof that shared universes, when executed carefully, can outperform virtually anything else the industry has tried. Given Marvel’s current slate of upcoming releases, this milestone likely won’t be the last one worth celebrating.
