Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Roars Back to No. 1 at the Box Office, Seven Years Later
Movie theaters have been leaning hard on nostalgia this year, with studios betting that audiences will show up for a second helping of the films that once broke box office records. Re-releases, anniversary screenings, and extended cuts have quietly become one of the more reliable playbooks in a marketplace still finding its footing.
That strategy is now paying off in a major way for one of the biggest franchises in movie history. Marvel Studios, riding a wave of anticipation for its next big team-up event, decided the moment was right to bring back an old favorite for one more run.
‘Avengers: Endgame’ is back on top of the domestic box office, seven years after it first hit theaters. ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore‘ landed at No. 1 on Friday, pulling in an estimated 11.2 million dollars from 3,060 North American screens, and industry estimates project the re-release will gross around 26 million dollars by the end of the weekend.
The rerelease isn’t a straight replay of the 2019 blockbuster. This version reportedly includes a modified ending and new post-credit material designed to tease ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, the next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe set to arrive in theaters on December 18.
Directed once again by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, the timing is clearly strategic. Getting fans back into theaters for ‘Endgame’ just months before ‘Doomsday’ opens gives Marvel a built-in marketing moment, complete with fresh footage that longtime fans won’t want spoiled for them online.
The film’s original run remains one of the most staggering achievements in Hollywood history. At the time of its 2019 release, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ became the second-highest-grossing movie ever made, hauling in 2.799 billion dollars worldwide, a mark still trailing only 2009’s ‘Avatar’ for the all-time global crown.
Just behind Marvel’s returning juggernaut, A24’s highly anticipated ‘Primetime’ opened in second place with roughly 8.49 million dollars from 2,874 locations, with estimates pointing to about 20.5 million dollars for the full weekend. Starring Robert Pattinson, the drama-thriller dramatizes Chris Hansen’s stint as host of Dateline NBC’s ‘To Catch a Predator’, and it has generated plenty of conversation since debuting at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month.
Rounding out the weekend’s crowded field of newcomers, ‘The Heart of the Beast’ opened in third place with an estimated 7.45 million dollars from 3,435 domestic locations. The Brad Pitt-led survival drama, directed by David Ayer, follows a retired veteran navigating a grueling trek to safety after he and his combat dog survive a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness, and it’s projected to gross around 20 million dollars domestically for its opening weekend.
Meanwhile, last week’s box office leader took a tumble. ‘Resident Evil’, based on the long-running Capcom video game series, slipped to fourth place with 6.9 million dollars across 3,684 locations after a franchise-best debut the previous weekend. The Zach Cregger-directed film follows a medical courier, played by Austin Abrams, who finds himself caught in a zombie outbreak while making a delivery to a hospital in Raccoon City.
For Marvel, though, the headline this weekend belongs squarely to ‘Endgame’. Seeing a seven-year-old film outmuscle a slate of fresh theatrical releases speaks to just how much goodwill the franchise still commands, and it sets an intriguing precedent for how studios might handle beloved titles going forward as ‘Doomsday’ looms on the horizon.

Whether ‘Endgame’ can inch closer to unseating ‘Avatar’ from its perch atop the all-time worldwide chart remains to be seen, but this weekend’s numbers suggest Marvel still knows how to fill theater seats even without a brand-new story to tell. The real test comes in December, when audiences find out whether nostalgia can translate into another genuine box office event.
