Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ Reboot Just Turned a Serious Profit, and It’s Not Slowing Down

Horror has quietly become one of the most dependable genres at the box office in recent years, and few directors have capitalized on that trend quite like Zach Cregger. After back-to-back hits with ‘Barbarian’ and the Oscar-winning ‘Weapons,’ expectations were already sky-high heading into his next project.

That next project turned out to be an ambitious reboot of one of gaming’s most enduring horror franchises, handing Cregger the keys to a series that had struggled to find its footing in recent years. Sony’s previous attempt to revive the property, 2021’s ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,’ had been both a critical and commercial disappointment.

Cregger’s version has told a very different story, with ‘Resident Evil’ now crossing $196 million at the worldwide box office against a reported $75 million production budget. That’s a remarkable turnaround for a franchise many assumed had already run its course.

The film’s opening weekend alone generated $108.3 million globally, including a $60 million domestic debut that marked the biggest opening in the franchise’s history. Reviews have been similarly strong, with ‘Resident Evil’ holding scores as high as 95 to 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best-reviewed entry the video game adaptation series has ever produced.

That combination of strong reviews and box office momentum pushed ‘Resident Evil’ past its estimated break-even point of around $150 million after just nine days in theaters, officially turning a profit for Sony Pictures. With the film continuing to perform well into its second weekend, industry estimates project it could surpass $190 million globally before long, putting the current $196 million milestone well within reach of continued growth.

Industry analysts have pointed to Cregger’s involvement as a major factor behind the reboot’s success. “Putting Zach Cregger in charge of a major franchise like ‘Resident Evil’ [made] something familiar feel fresh and original again,” said Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian, who also noted the growing influence of younger horror audiences on the box office.

Notably, Cregger’s take on the material charts an entirely original story rather than directly adapting any specific game in the series, a decision that initially worried some longtime fans. That approach ultimately paid off, with the film centering on a medical courier navigating a chaotic outbreak in Raccoon City rather than leaning on established characters from the games.

Even with its current success, ‘Resident Evil’ still has some ground to cover before it can claim the title of the franchise’s biggest earner. That distinction still belongs to 2016’s ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,’ which grossed $312 million worldwide, a number Cregger’s film is increasingly likely to challenge given its current trajectory.

Questions have already started swirling about whether Cregger himself might return for a potential sequel, especially given his packed schedule of upcoming projects. “I can’t help thinking about other places this story could go,” Cregger told The Playlist when asked about his future involvement with the franchise ahead of the film’s release.

Given how thoroughly this reboot has outperformed its predecessor, both critically and commercially, it wouldn’t be surprising if Sony moves quickly to capitalize on the momentum. Cregger’s ability to breathe new life into long-dormant horror properties has now been proven twice over, first with ‘Barbarian’ and now with an entire studio franchise.

With ‘Resident Evil’ continuing to climb and Cregger’s reputation growing with every release, this reboot may end up being remembered as the moment the franchise finally found its footing again on the big screen. Whether that momentum translates into a full-fledged cinematic universe remains to be seen.
