Anne Hathaway Vanishes in a Puff of Smoke After Her Final ‘Verity’ Premiere in Latest Video
Few stars have had a year quite like Anne Hathaway’s. After sitting out 2025, she returned in 2026 with five films across five genres, an almost old-school movie-star workload. The Anne Hathaway ‘Verity’ sign-off feels like the closing chapter of one of the busiest calendar years of her career.
Her slate began with the A24 drama ‘Mother Mary’ in April, followed by ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ on May 1, which grossed $693.2 million worldwide and became the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2026. Next came Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ in July, with a cast that included Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Zendaya and Tom Holland, and the sci-fi film ‘The End of Oak Street’ with Ewan McGregor in August. Two of those releases currently rank among the 10 highest-grossing movies of the year at the domestic box office.
On Oct. 2, as ‘Verity‘ hit theaters, Hathaway posted a video showing her vanishing in a puff of smoke, just as she had promised. Film Updates shared the clip on X, noting that she disappears after her final film premiere of the year. In the video, she thanks everyone for supporting her and for making the year unforgettable, while also shouting out Zendaya, Tom, Rob and Florence and urging them to bring it home.

The gag has a backstory. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Hathaway joked that after the movie comes out she would “vanish in a plume of smoke.” She added that she wouldn’t be seen again until she has to be. That break comes as she prepares to give birth to her third child with husband Adam Shulman.
‘Verity’ marks Hathaway’s fifth and final press tour of 2026, following ‘Mother Mary,’ ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘The End of Oak Street.’ She traveled the globe and appeared on dozens of red carpets while pregnant. Her last stop was the New York premiere at AMC Lincoln Square on Sept. 29.
The pregnancy even affected her promotional plans. Hathaway said on the ‘Talk of the Townsends’ podcast that she had hoped to do the ‘Hot Ones’ challenge, since the online series appears in the movie. Her doctor warned against it because it could disrupt her pregnancy, so she is hoping for another chance next year.
On Oct. 2, she also sat down with Gayle King on ‘CBS Mornings’ to discuss the film and reflected on how she has chilled out about fame. It was one last interview before the break.
The film is Amazon MGM Studios’ adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling psychological thriller, directed by Michael Showalter from a script by Nick Antosca. Hathaway plays Verity Crawford, a bestselling author who has been unable to write since a mysterious accident left her unable to walk or talk. Dakota Johnson stars as struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, who is hired by Verity’s husband Jeremy, played by Josh Hartnett, to finish the books in her series.
While working in the Crawford home, Lowen discovers a disturbing manuscript that raises questions about Verity and her family. Hathaway also produced the film. It is rated R.
Critics have been mixed. The film holds a Metascore of 45 based on 31 reviews. The A.V. Club said the stars are compelling enough to keep it from flatlining, though it isn’t the genre workout it should be, and The Hollywood Reporter was harsher, calling it a dumb mystery.

Don’t expect a long retreat. Hathaway is set to return in March 2027 to film ‘Days of Thunder 2’ alongside Tom Cruise. She is also attached to the adaptation of ‘Yesteryear’ and is working on ‘The Princess Diaries 3,’ among other projects.

For now, the actress has earned the rest. After delivering five films and preparing for her third child in a single year, Hathaway’s smoky exit feels like the perfect punctuation mark.
