Joe Russo Teases ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is Unlike Any Marvel Movie Yet
‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has been one of the most closely watched Marvel projects for a long time, and its path to theaters has not been simple. The film was first pushed to May 1, 2026 and later delayed again to December 18, 2026, giving the filmmakers extra time to finish production. Now that the release is closing in, the people behind it are starting to share what audiences should expect.
The Russo brothers are back in the director’s chair, working from a script credited to Michael Waldron, Stephen McFeely, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The enormous ensemble includes Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. At the center of it all is Robert Downey Jr., returning to Marvel as Doctor Doom.
In a promotional interview with Fandango, Joe Russo described the movie as intense and said it feels “different than any of the other movies that Marvel’s made.” He added that what happens in the film is very surprising and that the tone departs sharply from what fans have seen before.
Russo also singled out Downey’s performance. He said the actor plays one of the all-time great villains and will bring a gravitas and energy that can be frightening.
Marvel fans have seen a world-ending villain before, and Joe Russo addressed the comparison directly. In the same Fandango conversation, he called Doom much more Machiavellian and manipulative than Thanos, whom he described as a brute force of nature.
According to that discussion, Doom studies his opponents and makes sure he has the tactical and power advantages before engaging. Anthony Russo added that Doom has an underlying validity to his worldview despite making the wrong choices, which makes the character relatable even when his motives are misguided.
The brothers were careful not to spoil anything, but both repeatedly described the ending as very surprising. Reports on the interview say they also pointed to the tonal swing as the thing they are most excited about.
On length, Anthony Russo said the movie runs roughly 2.5 hours, which is notably shorter than ‘Avengers: Endgame’ despite the sprawling cast. He described the story as a focused, propulsive narrative organized around a central idea. The interview also touched on new scenes in ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’, which connect to where ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ begins.
Downey’s casting has been one of the film’s biggest talking points. The Russos have called Doom one of the most complex characters in the comics, and they have said they chose Downey because he can portray both the villain’s immense power and his vulnerabilities. Reports also say the actor developed his own backstory for the character and contributed costume ideas.
During a 92Y conversation with Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr., Anthony Russo compared the casting to putting Tony Stark against Captain America in ‘Civil War’, calling it a deliberately challenging idea. He also said the directors are fully committed to Downey as Victor Von Doom.

The official synopsis describes heroes from 3 distinct universes set on a deadly collision course against an existential threat unlike anything they have faced. The Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men are all caught up in a collapsing multiverse, with Doom at the center of the crisis.
Principal photography began on April 28, 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England, with location work in Bahrain and Windsor Great Park, and wrapped on September 19, 2025. Marketing has built steadily since then, from teasers that played alongside ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ to a first full trailer at CinemaCon in April 2026 and a Doom-focused look in August.
If Joe Russo’s description holds, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could mark a real shift in how Marvel presents its biggest crossovers. A heavier tone, a calculating villain and a surprising finale are a long way from the lighter team-ups that fans might expect. Add a focused runtime for such a huge cast and the Russos appear to be promising something tighter and more daring than a standard crossover.
