Few films this year have dominated the conversation like ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s reset for Tom Holland’s web-slinger opened to a $360.1 million domestic weekend and has since grossed roughly $2.5 billion worldwide on a $225 million budget.

Sony says the film crossed $1 billion in just six days and became the biggest movie in domestic box office history. Now, more than two months after its July 31 debut, it is finally moving into living rooms, with a digital release on October 6 and 4K, Blu-ray and DVD editions arriving December 15.

Now the opening credits of the movie have been released.

Instead of the usual collage of MCU highlights, the custom logo uses footage of the memories Peter no longer shares with Ned, MJ and Aunt May. It’s a visual shorthand for the spell cast by Doctor Strange at the end of ‘No Way Home,’ which made the world forget that Peter Parker exists.

The sequence that follows picks up four years later, with Peter protecting New York City alone and quietly keeping tabs on his friends. An opening montage covers his years of crime-fighting, and the film leans on ‘Wolf Like Me’ by TV on the Radio during that stretch.

It’s a bold, melancholy way to start a superhero movie, and it sets up the emotional stakes before a single punch is thrown. The end credits continue the theme, with casual images of New York City captured by director Lloyd Lee Choi.

Critics praised Cretton for turning a teen franchise into something more adult and emotionally complex, and Holland’s performance has been a frequent highlight. The cast also includes Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Florence Pugh, Marisa Tomei and Mark Ruffalo.

Michael Giacchino returns as composer, and the score album arrived on the same day as the film. Giacchino has said he deliberately removed notes from the familiar Spider-Man theme to reflect everything Peter has lost.

That combination of craft and box office success has made the film one of the biggest hits in franchise history. It has also given Sony a strong foundation for whatever comes next for the character.

For fans who want to rewatch the opening in full, the digital release is the first opportunity. The October 6 version requires renting or buying through a digital retailer, and Sony has not announced a date for a subscription streaming debut.

Reports have pointed to a first window on Netflix thanks to Sony’s deal, followed by Disney+, but neither has been confirmed. For now, anyone hoping to stream it for free will have to wait.

In the meantime, the clip is a reminder of how effectively the movie sets its tone in just a few minutes. Whether it’s the opening logo, the montage or the title sequence, ‘Brand New Day’ makes a strong first impression.
