Few superhero sequels have taken a longer road to the screen than ‘The Batman Part II.’ Originally dated for October 2025, it slid to October 2026, then to October 2027, and eventually settled on a February 2028 release as the script and post-production schedule were reworked.

After all that waiting, cameras finally started rolling in London this summer. Director Matt Reeves announced the start of production by sharing a photo of the film’s slate, and fans had every reason to believe the long delays were behind them.

That momentum has now come to a halt. On October 5, filming on the sequel has been paused, with Reeves temporarily stepping away for personal reasons.

The news was broken as an exclusive by Deadline, which reported that production is pausing on the Warner Bros. and DC Studios film as Reeves steps away. According to the studio’s statement, production has been “temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter.” The studio added that Reeves has its full support and that it looks forward to continuing the journey soon.

No further details about the family matter have been shared, and the studio’s statement keeps the reason private. Just Jared noted that no information was released about what Reeves is dealing with, which seems the right way to treat the situation.

Filming had been underway in London before the pause. Deadline’s sources say it is too early to know whether the stoppage will affect the February 18, 2028 release date, so the film’s schedule is, for now, an open question.

The pause lands on a project that has already been through a lot. CBR notes that the sequel was first pushed back by the 2023 WGA strike and later because the script was not finished, and The Hollywood Reporter says its development was a winding process that saw the start date pushed multiple times while Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin wrote the script.

Reeves is a central figure in this corner of the DC universe. He directed 2022’s ‘The Batman,’ which grossed $770.3 million globally, and launched the spinoff series ‘The Penguin’ starring Colin Farrell, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He also produced DC’s upcoming ‘Clayface’ movie.

The sequel’s ensemble is a big one. Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne, with Andy Serkis back as Alfred and Farrell returning as the Penguin, per CBR. Screen Rant adds that Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson and Brian Tyree Henry have joined the cast, though DC Studios has not officially revealed their characters.

For now, the film remains on the studio’s calendar, and DC Studios has framed the stoppage as temporary. The Playlist notes that the next steps are less clear, including whether Reeves could return in some capacity once his situation allows.

What matters most at this stage is that Reeves has the time he needs. Fans have waited years for this sequel, and a little more patience would be a small price while he handles something far more important than a release date.
