‘NCIS’ Season 24 Episode 1 Premiere Recap & Ending Explained: Tony DiNozzo Returns and Takes the Director’s Chair
Few procedurals can keep a fanbase guessing after more than 20 years on the air, but ‘NCIS’ keeps finding new ways to do it. This week’s premiere leaned on one of the franchise’s most beloved names, and the ‘NCIS‘ premiere recap and ending explained below covers what happened and where it leaves the team. Spoilers ahead.
The new season airs on CBS on Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, with episodes streaming the next day on Paramount+. It also includes the series’ 500th episode, and it is the last season to feature Rocky Carroll as a series regular. His Leon Vance died last season, and Gabriel LaRoche (Seamus Dever) stepped in as the agency’s new director.
Fans were left hanging by the previous finale, which ended with a tense standoff between Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and McGee’s son Mateo (Patrick Keleher). Everyone wanted to know who had been shot. The answer, in an episode titled “Wayward Son,” turned out to be a very familiar face.
McGee arrives at the scene in a panic and finds that Torres is fine and Mateo isn’t hurt either. Then Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) emerges from an ambulance with his arm in a bloody sling. He had heard about a case involving NCIS from a hacker, stumbled onto the standoff, and was shot by Mateo, who ran. Tony insists he was only “barely grazed.”
Tony is in D.C. opening a satellite office for his security firm Salus Mondiale. His daughter Tali is at a boarding school in Boston, with Ziva working at a language institute nearby. The orange walls of the NCIS office trigger some nostalgia, but LaRoche quickly orders everyone out because the case involves McGee’s son.
LaRoche suspends Nick and makes clear he’s not a fan of Parker’s team. The group works the case off the books with Tony’s help, and Kasie discovers that Mateo stole classified information about the Secretary of the Navy’s security detail. Soon after, the Secretary’s daughter Catherine is kidnapped, and the kidnappers demand a file from the Navy.
Things escalate at a diner, where Tony poses as a waiter to warn McGee and Mateo before LaRoche’s tactical team can grab the young man. Parker gloats that Tony isn’t technically an agent. LaRoche doesn’t find it funny and fires him.

The kidnappers want a physical file, so Nick and Jess dig through the dusty archives and find it in an old cabinet. It turns out to be a simple request form for office supplies from 60 years ago, which makes no sense as a ransom demand. Meanwhile, Tony traces the kidnapper’s car to Baltimore Harbor and works out which ship Catherine is being held on.
He suspects it’s a diversion, like in the third ‘Die Hard’ movie, and he’s right. The ship was a decoy to pull the team away from the cabinet, which holds a hidden stash of diamonds. Tony figures it out thanks to his love of ‘The Goonies,’ and Nick and Jess ditch LaRoche’s wild goose chase to save him. Catherine is rescued, Mateo’s name is cleared, and Parker gets his job back.
The final scene is the real headline. Back in his makeshift office, Tony finds the Secretary of the Navy (Jillian Armenante) waiting. She admits she put the wrong person in the director’s chair and says she shouldn’t have let her first choice say no.
Tony protests that the timing is wrong, but she tells him LaRoche isn’t the right guy and he is. She also reveals that Ziva pushed him to take the job, and that she has already sent out a press release. LaRoche loses his job in the process.

Showrunner Steven D. Binder explained the idea to TheWrap, describing Tony as “the kid in high school who pulled the fire alarm” who now runs the place. He wants a director who shakes things up without being the usual antagonistic boss. Weatherly is currently set for a season-long arc, but Binder added that “Michael will feel like a series regular.”
Binder also said not to count LaRoche out entirely, and that Ziva could visit while Tony is on the job. New faces may join the team too.
What do you think of Tony becoming the new NCIS director?
