‘NCIS: New York’ Series Episode 1 Premiere Recap & Ending Explained: Why Sam Hanna Finally Came Home
Every long-running franchise eventually asks the same question: how do you make a familiar face feel new again? ‘NCIS‘ has been answering that for years, and its latest spinoff gets a second chance with one of its most reliable heroes. This ‘NCIS: New York’ premiere recap and ending explained covers the case, the shootout and the decision at the end. Spoilers ahead.
CBS ordered the spinoff in April, bringing LL COOL J’s Sam Hanna back as a full-time lead for the first time since ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ ended after 14 seasons in 2023. Scott Caan co-stars as Nick Schaeffer, a roguish agent who becomes Sam’s partner, and Jennifer Beals joined the cast in July. It airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on CBS, and the premiere debuted on October 6.
The pilot doesn’t start in New York at all. It opens in Dubai, where Sam takes out a group of bad guys in a swanky hotel while ignoring calls from a friend named Jack Halloway. Once he’s safe, Sam calls Jack back and leaves an apologetic voicemail, but the audience already knows Jack is dead on a bench in Central Park.
Sam heads to the NCIS New York field office, where he tells supervisor Robyn Wells (Beals) that Jack was very close to him. He served with Jack’s father and has known him his whole life. The NYPD calls it a suicide, but Sam isn’t buying it, and Robyn pairs him with Nick, who was pulled in on his day off.
Sam insists he’s only back for one case. He meets the rest of the team: Addy (Jacqueline Byers), Wyatt (Shane Harper) and tech whiz Sean (Devin Druid), who is working off a punishment for hacking the police pension fund. Jimmy Palmer joins on Zoom and confirms Sam’s suspicion that Jack was murdered.
Jack was a tugboat captain, and a second bullet at the scene proves it wasn’t suicide. Sam and Nick search Jack’s boat and find a lockbox with about seven grand in cash. A defensive Sam doesn’t believe Jack could have been mixed up in anything dangerous, and Sean spots footage of a runner wearing a cap with an angry eel logo from a minor league team in Norfolk, Virginia.
The cap leads to Jack’s first mate Dave, who admits he was there when Jack died. An infrared camera on the boat shows people jumping off an ocean liner and climbing aboard, and Nick realizes Jack wasn’t smuggling drugs but people. The passengers are mercenaries, and Dave planted the cash to make Jack look dirty because they were holding his online girlfriend hostage. She turns out to be a catfish.
The mercenaries’ real target is an NYU student, the daughter of a Russian mining oligarch, kidnapped for a rival’s leverage. Sam and Nick lead a task force to an empty nightclub in Bushwick, and a fierce firefight follows. Sean uses surveillance cameras to guide Nick to an upstairs window, where he ends up in hand-to-hand combat with one thug.
Sam shoots the man dead, saving Nick’s life. They get the girl home safe, and Sam brings Jack’s widow Janice an American flag as a salute to his service.

The final scene is the heart of the pilot. Nick takes Sam to a spot under a bridge and tells him, “This is where all the action is.” Sam feels like a stranger after being gone so long, but Nick understands: he tried to escape his family’s legacy of cops and firefighters by going into finance, then came back, saying “This is my home.”
Nick adds that Sam is the best at what he does and that he wants to work with the best. With “Empire State of Mind” playing, Sam agrees to join the team, and the two head out for a bite.
Will Sam really stay?
Not necessarily, according to LL COOL J. He told TV Insider on the premiere red carpet that “there’s no guarantee he’ll stay.” That keeps some tension in the partnership going forward.
Sam’s grief over his friend’s death is still fresh, and he has been running for years. Nick may have convinced him to stay for now, but the question hangs over the team.
Should Sam stay with the new NCIS: New York team?
