Ben Affleck is having a banner year at Netflix, and he is not slowing down. His action thriller ‘The Rip’ narrowly missed cracking the streamer’s all-time top ten list, and now he is back behind the camera and in front of it for a second major feature. That follow-up is ‘Animals‘, a tense crime drama that has already got people talking.

Affleck directs, cowrote the script and stars in the political thriller, with Matt Damon on board as a producer. For anyone wondering what to expect from this new Netflix thriller, the early signs point to something dark, gritty and deeply uncomfortable in the best possible way.

‘Animals’ Release Date and How to Watch

Netflix has set the premiere for October 9, 2026, with a same day release in select theaters. That means viewers who want the big screen experience can get it, while everyone else can simply press play at home.

The film is rated R, and it arrives globally on the streamer on that date. That rating suggests the movie will not pull its punches, which fits the tone of everything shown so far.

The timing also makes sense for Netflix. Affleck and Damon’s company Artists Equity has a multi year deal with the streamer to produce original films, and ‘The Rip’ became the second most watched movie of the first half of the year. The platform clearly wants to keep that momentum rolling.

What the ‘Animals’ Trailer Reveals

The first teaser landed in August, and it did something bold by saying almost nothing. Netflix released a teaser with no dialogue at all, relying on eerie music and a buzzing telephone to build anxiety, with some imagery recalling Affleck’s heist thriller ‘The Town’. It is a confident move that trusts the audience to lean in.

The footage opens with Affleck receiving an ominous phone call that looks like the ransom demand, and it shows his character appearing to have a warm bond with his wife and son. That warmth makes the dread land harder once things begin to unravel.

A handful of shots tease the character getting into trouble with law enforcement and taking matters into his own hands. The reaction online was strong, and one viewer summed up the mood by saying the trailer gave them chills without a single spoken word.

‘Animals’ Cast and Who Is in the Ensemble

Affleck leads the film, and he is joined by some seriously respected names. Kerry Washington and Gillian Anderson are in the lineup, along with Adriana Paz, Ray Fisher, Christopher Woodley, Matt Gerald, Jacob Estrada, Luis Gerardo Méndez and Steven Yeun. It is a deep bench for a story that looks like it lives in close, claustrophobic moments.

Yeun has history with Affleck, having worked with him earlier on ‘The Rip’. That kind of familiarity can pay off in a thriller where trust and betrayal are always lurking.

There is also a casting twist worth knowing about. Damon was originally supposed to play the lead role with Affleck only directing, but he had to step away because Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ was approaching. Instead, Damon stayed attached as a producer, and Affleck stepped into the part himself.

‘Animals’ Plot and the Ransom at the Center

The official logline says a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife are drawn into a web of deception when their son is kidnapped, and as they scramble to raise the ransom they face choices that could tear their world apart. It is a simple hook with plenty of room for moral chaos.

Affleck plays Mark Kimball, a high profile candidate whose carefully managed campaign and personal life are shattered by the abduction, and Washington plays his wife Abigail. Politics and parenthood collide in the worst possible way.

The money angle adds another layer of pressure. The couple spent most of their cash funding his campaign, so they are pushed toward extreme moral choices and getting their hands dirty to bring their son home safely.

The project has had a long road to the screen too. It was announced in 2024 and initially put on hold because Affleck had scheduling conflicts while filming ‘The Accountant 2’. Now that it is finally arriving, the question is how far Mark Kimball will go, and whether you would have crossed the same lines for your own child before the ransom clock ran out.
