David Corenswet Teases a New Superman Suit and Deeper Lex Luthor Rivalry in ‘Man of Tomorrow’
Superman sequels have a long tradition of changing things up, from darker tones to new costumes and bigger villains. ‘Man of Tomorrow‘ is already shaping up to follow that pattern, with James Gunn returning to write and direct. Now the film’s star has shared fresh hints about what to expect.
David Corenswet, who took on the Man of Steel in 2025’s ‘Superman,’ has been relatively quiet while the sequel was in production. The movie wrapped filming on August 26, according to reports, and he has begun to open up about the experience. Fans have been hungry for any detail about the Superman ‘Man of Tomorrow’ suit and the story that surrounds it.
At a screening in New York on Monday, October 5, Corenswet told People that the suit is a little bit different this time around, and that the film goes deeper into Superman’s relationship with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. The screening took place at the Whitby Hotel and was for an upcoming biopic in which Corenswet plays Tuggle, a man who died of cancer in 1986 at age 25. He also said his time as Superman helped prepare him for that role.
The costume tease lines up with what fans have been picking up from set photos. Early images made the new suit look almost identical to the one from 2025, and some outlets even said it appeared to be the same costume. Closer looks suggested otherwise, with a tighter fit, a bigger chest symbol and an altered collar that exposes more of the throat.
That detail matters because Corenswet previously said the original suit was uncomfortably tight. Any change that makes the costume easier to wear would be welcome, even if the differences are small. James Gunn has also explained that the design is meant to make Superman look approachable rather than intimidating.
The story promises to put the two characters in a very different position. In ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ Superman and Lex Luthor reluctantly team up against Brainiac, a superintelligent alien android played by Lars Eidinger. Gunn has described the film as being as much a Lex movie as a Superman movie, saying it is about the two having to work together against a much bigger threat.
Corenswet said something similar in an earlier Entertainment Tonight interview. He called the characters a little more mature and said the film goes a little deeper, while teasing some crazy stuff, including Hoult in Lex’s war suit. He joked that Hoult would be hard to fight in the armor.
Gunn has already shared a first-look photo of Hoult in the green-and-purple suit, captioned as a fit check from the set. Set photos have also shown the production using a substantial practical version of the armor rather than relying entirely on visual effects. That could make the fights feel more physical on screen.
Corenswet also told People that the shoot felt like summer camp, and that coming back for a second film was a lot of fun. He described the filming as a great time and talked about reuniting with castmates, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Hoult. That camaraderie could help sell the more emotional beats Gunn has promised.
The cast is also growing. Skyler Gisondo, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced and Sara Sampaio are all listed to return, and new faces include Adria Arjona as Maxima, Aaron Pierre as Jon Stewart and Milly Alcock as Supergirl. That is a lot of heroes and villains to juggle.
Not everyone is sure what a more mature Superman will mean. Some commentators have said they hope the sequel keeps the hope and sincerity that made Corenswet’s take stand out. So far, though, his comments suggest growth rather than a total reinvention.
‘Man of Tomorrow’ is scheduled to reach theaters on July 9, 2027. That leaves plenty of time for more set photos, trailers and teases before audiences see the finished product. For now, a slightly different suit and a deeper rivalry are enough to keep fans guessing.
