Chris Hemsworth Shares ‘Extraction 3’ Muay Thai Training in Thailand as Production Nears the Finish Line
Action franchises live and die by their physical commitment. Audiences have come to expect that the stars of high-octane thrillers are doing more than standing in front of green screens. Few leading men have leaned into that expectation as consistently as the actor behind Netflix’s black-ops mercenary.
Chris Hemsworth has spent much of 2026 preparing for his third outing as Tyler Rake. In July, he shared a stripped-down workout from a vacation in Costa Rica, using only resistance bands, kettlebells and bodyweight moves in a 17-exercise circuit. He called it a minimal equipment session, and fans noted how jacked he looked heading into production.
Now a new glimpse of that preparation has emerged from the other side of the world. In a clip from Hemsworth’s Instagram, the actor is seen training for ‘Extraction 3‘ while shooting in Thailand. The 12-second video shows a shirtless Hemsworth in Muay Thai-style shorts throwing a knee into pads held by a trainer in a ring, and he says he has been lucky enough to hit pads with a good mate during the shoot. He ends with a thank-you to his sparring partner.
The location carries some history. The first ‘Extraction,’ released on Netflix on April 24, 2020, was filmed in Thailand and India, with its climactic bridge battle shot at the Lat Bua Khao Bridge in Ratchaburi. Returning to the country for the third film feels like a full-circle moment for the series.
Production documents indicate that the new shoot spans Sydney, the NSW South Coast and Thailand. Earlier rumors had pointed to a European leg, but those plans appear to have changed. Filming was expected to run from early July through early October 2026, so this training clip likely arrives close to the end of principal photography.
The film brings back director Sam Hargrave, who has helmed the franchise since the beginning, and Hemsworth is returning as Tyler Rake. Idris Elba is back as the mysterious operative Alcott, and Golshifteh Farahani returns as Nik Khan. ‘Citadel’ showrunner David Weil wrote the screenplay, with Joe Russo also credited.
The story is expected to pick up after the cliffhanger ending of ‘Extraction 2,’ in which Tyler and a trusted ally were sprung from prison by Alcott. The franchise is based on the graphic novel ‘Ciudad’ by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González and Eric Skillman. Plot details remain under wraps.
When production began, Hargrave said the team was looking forward to making the third chapter in New South Wales and described it as their biggest swing yet. Hemsworth marked the start of filming with a set photo alongside Elba and Hargrave. There is no official release date, though the film is expected to arrive in 2027, reportedly in late summer or fall.

The delay was partly due to Hemsworth’s packed schedule, which has included ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and the upcoming ‘Kockroach.’ That made it a long wait for fans after the franchise’s second installment arrived in 2023. At a Netflix Tudum event in Brazil days after that release, Hemsworth and Hargrave surprised audiences by announcing that a third film was already being discussed.
The franchise has been a major success for Netflix. The first film became one of the platform’s biggest releases at the time, and both entries have been praised for their commitment to old-school action. Training in Muay Thai is a natural fit for the physical, hand-to-hand style that has defined Tyler Rake.
Hemsworth’s approach is consistent with a long history of doing as much of the action as possible himself. The Costa Rica workout focused on endurance, and the Thailand clip shows him moving into combat-specific work. Together, they suggest a performance built on stamina as much as muscle.
For fans, these small glimpses are the best clues yet about how the film may look. They also hint that Rake’s next mission will demand more than gunfights and car chases, with fight choreography likely to play a major role.
As filming appears to be approaching its final weeks, the wait for official footage will begin in earnest. Until then, behind-the-scenes clips like this keep the anticipation alive.
