Late-night talk show appearances are a special kind of promotional ritual. Stars arrive with a perfectly polished look, a few rehearsed stories and, if they’re lucky, one moment that takes on a life of its own. For Jessica Chastain, this week’s stop was well timed.

The Oscar winner is heading into one of the busiest weeks of her year. Her new horror film opens this Friday, and she has spent recent weeks working her way through press events, Q&As and interviews. A backstage photo of her glamorous late-night look is the latest piece of that campaign.

On October 8, a fan account shared a portrait of Chastain backstage at ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’. The image shows the actress smiling in front of a green floral wallpaper print dotted with yellow and cream blossoms. It’s a polished, relaxed shot, and it fits the glamorous side of her press-tour persona perfectly.

Chastain wears a black long-sleeve turtleneck with a draped, gathered waist, keeping the outfit sleek and simple. Her blonde hair is styled in a vintage-inspired bob with soft waves, and she finishes the look with bold red lipstick and a pale manicure. A ring is visible on her hand as she stands with her arms crossed, looking relaxed and confident.

The designer behind the top and the team behind the styling weren’t identified in the post, so details remain limited. Still, the combination of dark clothing, red lips and an old-Hollywood hairstyle echoes the polished approach she has long been known for on red carpets. The contrast with the creepy character she plays on screen is part of the fun.

Chastain appeared on the Wednesday, October 7 episode of the show to discuss ‘Other Mommy‘. Author Malcolm Gladwell also appeared that night, while Sophia James sat in with The Cletones. The late-night series airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on ABC and is in its 23rd season.

Clips from the episode quickly spread online. One of them, which a separate report says shows Chastain demonstrating the film’s unnerving smile, also shows her watching Kimmel attempt the same expression. By that account, Kimmel’s version was much less convincing, and Chastain laughed as he tried to hold it.

That smile is central to the movie’s marketing. ‘Other Mommy’ follows Bela, an 8-year-old girl who forms a relationship with a sinister entity that looks exactly like her mother. Chastain plays both Bela’s real mom and the supernatural double known as ‘Other Mommy’.

In a Q&A on the Universal lot, which CinemaBlend attended, Chastain explained how she developed the expression. While testing it in the makeup trailer, she showed it to a five-year-old who screamed, and she and director Rob Savage knew they’d found it. It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes story that makes late-night hosts eager to ask.

‘Other Mommy’ is adapted from Josh Malerman’s novel ‘Incidents Around the House’ and directed by Rob Savage, who made ‘Host’ and ‘The Boogeyman’. James Wan produces through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, and Universal releases the film in theaters on October 9. Arabella Olivia Clark plays Bela, with Jay Duplass as her father, ‘Daddo’, and a supporting cast that includes Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed and Karen Allen.

The first trailer went viral in July after reportedly startling audiences before screenings of ‘The Odyssey’. It features a lunch scene turned nightmare and the unsettling question “Can I go inside your heart?” Some viewers compared the premise to ‘Coraline’, but the film’s body horror is clearly aimed at adults.

Chastain won the Academy Award for Best Actress for ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’ and has stayed busy since. She also returned to television this year with Apple TV+’s limited series ‘The Savant’, which premiered in July after a delayed release. ‘Other Mommy’ marks her latest turn in the horror genre, following earlier credits such as ‘Mama’ and ‘It Chapter Two’.

For now, the backstage photo offers a quieter counterpoint to all the scares. It shows the actress at her most polished, just hours before she demonstrated one of the creepiest smiles of the year. With the movie arriving in theaters on Friday, the contrast is likely to keep fans talking.

How would you rate Jessica Chastain’s glamorous backstage look for ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’?
