Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot Gets a Filming Window, and Cameras Are Reportedly Closer Than Fans Think
Marvel fans have been waiting a long time to see mutants take center stage in the MCU. The studio has spent years laying groundwork, and the pieces have finally started to click into place. The ‘X-Men’ reboot is now moving from rumor to reality, with a timeline that is becoming clearer.
The project has been the subject of intense speculation, from casting whispers to creative-team shake-ups. Every new detail seems to trigger a fresh wave of excitement, and the latest update points to the start of production.
The ‘X-Men’ reboot is expected to begin filming in early 2027. The timing traces back to a Vanity Fair interview with Sadie Sink, who plays Jean Grey. She said she will shoot ‘X-Men’ next and then move on to an FX and A24 series called ‘The Marriage Plot’, which she described as happening next year.
From that comment, outlets have concluded that principal photography will begin in 2027, most likely early in the year. That is an inference rather than an official studio announcement, and Marvel has not confirmed an exact start date. One crew listing had suggested production could begin toward the end of summer 2026 at Pinewood or in Ireland, but that was not studio-confirmed, and other outlets point to 2027.
Several outlets report that the film is set for May 5, 2028, a date that was announced at D23 2026. At least one outlet notes that Marvel has not officially confirmed the date, and others say no release date has been announced, so fans should treat the timing with caution. The film would kick off what has been described as the “Mutant Saga” as Marvel marks 20 years of the MCU.
The reboot has no official title yet. It is intended as a fresh start that replaces Fox’s earlier X-Men franchise. Kevin Feige has described the film as very youth-oriented.
Jake Schreier, who directed ‘Thunderbolts’, is attached to direct. Reports differ on the screenwriters. Some outlets credit Michael Lesslie, who wrote ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’, while others say Schreier has named Lee Sung Jin of ‘Beef’ and Joanna Calo of ‘The Bear’ as writers on the film.
That mix of talent points to a project that blends big-budget storytelling with character-driven writing. It also suggests that the script has gone through more than one pass as the studio shaped its approach to the mutants.
Sink was revealed as Jean Grey after ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which brought mutants into the MCU. Kit Connor plays Cyclops, and he has described his version as a really different take. Samara Weaving is Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott is Professor Charles Xavier, Maya Boyd is Storm and Inde Navarrette is Rogue.
Adam Driver plays Nathaniel Milbury, a longtime alias of Mister Sinister. Asa Germann has been reported as being in final talks to play Angel. Casting for several other roles remains open.
Wolverine has not been cast, and Deadline has read a video from Hugh Jackman at D23 as a sign that he is not returning, though a rumor about Henry Cavill remains unconfirmed. Beast and Iceman casting is reportedly underway, and Magneto is an open role, with Marvel not saying whether he appears in the first film. Three unnamed supporting roles have also been mentioned by a scooper.
Many of these details come from rumors and scoopers, so some of them may change. It is a reminder that a major reboot is still a work in progress, even with a start date on the horizon.
The original Fox cast, including Hugh Jackman and James Marsden, is expected to appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which one outlet calls the likely finale for that group. That film arrives in December 2026, with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen returning. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ follows in December 2027.
That sequence places the new ‘X-Men’ film in the middle of Marvel’s larger multiverse plans. Filming early next year would give the studio time to prepare the film for its reported release while the franchise builds toward its next big event.
Sink has said she has not yet met her fellow cast members but hopes to soon, and she has described the characters as flawed, which suggests the reboot will lean into complexity. The more that comes out about the production, the more it looks like a carefully planned relaunch.
