‘The Odyssey’ Is Less Than $2 Million Away From Overtaking ‘The Avengers’ at the Domestic Box Office

Christopher Nolan has built a career on making audiences return to theaters, but even by his standards, 2026 has been something special. His adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem arrived in July with enormous expectations and has kept finding new records to break. Nearly three months later, ‘The Odyssey‘ is still adding to its tally.

The film’s run has been defined by staying power. It opened on July 17 with a $124.5 million domestic debut and $264.1 million worldwide, the biggest global opening of Nolan’s career. Audiences gave it an A CinemaScore and a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and strong word of mouth has carried it ever since.

Now, a new landmark is within reach. ‘The Odyssey’ has reached $621.4 million at the domestic box office, putting it less than $2 million shy of ‘The Avengers’, which grossed $623.3 million in North America. Once it clears that gap, Nolan’s R-rated mythological epic will have passed one of the most celebrated superhero films ever made.

The comparison carries weight. ‘The Avengers’ was the 2012 crossover that helped define the modern blockbuster, and it holds the No. 15 spot on the all-time domestic list. It is also the seventh-highest-grossing Marvel movie in North America, which makes the milestone even more striking for a film with no superheroes.

The climb has been steady and fast. The film posted a $90 million second weekend, a drop of only 27% from its opening. It crossed $1 billion worldwide in just three weeks, becoming the fifth film of 2026 to reach that mark.

Domestically, it passed the entire lifetime gross of ‘Oppenheimer’, roughly $330 million, in 13 days. It later overtook ‘The Dark Knight’ to become Nolan’s highest-grossing film in North America, joining the all-time domestic top 20 in the process. At the same time, it became his highest-grossing release worldwide, overtaking ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.

The film’s achievements go well beyond Nolan’s own catalog. It became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time worldwide, passing ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. It is also the highest-grossing IMAX release in history, a fitting result for the first narrative feature shot entirely on IMAX film cameras.

Its worldwide total has since climbed past $1.7 billion, and it has already passed the global lifetime gross of ‘The Avengers’. The only 2026 release to stay ahead of it internationally has been ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. For a three-hour, R-rated period piece, that is remarkable company.

The film’s success also helps explain why 2026 has been such a strong year for theaters. Hollywood was banking on ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to lift domestic ticket sales above $4 billion, and the summer box office reached $4.24 billion by mid-August. The results suggest that audiences will still turn out for ambitious, original-feeling spectacle.

Part of the appeal is the cast. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. Nolan reportedly spent time studying translations of the epic before settling on a realistic interpretation of Greek mythology.

With the gap to ‘The Avengers’ this small, the milestone may be only days away. After that, the film will keep drifting up the all-time domestic chart, one rank at a time. Its budget was an estimated $250 million, so the returns are far beyond what the studio could have expected.

For Nolan, it is a remarkable follow-up to ‘Oppenheimer’, which collected seven Oscars and grossed about $975 million worldwide. ‘The Odyssey’ has now eclipsed it by every box office measure. Whether it can climb even higher on the domestic chart remains to be seen, but its run has already been historic.

Do you think The Odyssey deserves to surpass The Avengers at the domestic box office?
