Monica Barbaro Sparkles in Ice-Blue Sequins at the ‘Artificial’ London Premiere
A good red carpet look needs a good story behind it, and few films this year have a stranger one than ‘Artificial.’ Luca Guadagnino’s OpenAI drama has gone from a studio-backed awards hopeful to an orphaned project to a festival darling in a matter of months. Its London gala was always going to be a moment.
The film follows the chaotic days around OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s sudden firing and reinstatement in 2023, with Andrew Garfield playing Altman. Guadagnino directs from a script by Simon Rich, and the cast includes Yura Borisov, Mark Rylance and Ike Barinholtz. After its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5, the film crossed the Atlantic for its UK debut.
That UK debut gave the red carpet its star turn. On Sunday, October 11, Monica Barbaro arrived at the Royal Festival Hall for the film’s gala screening at the 70th BFI London Film Festival in a shimmering ice-blue sequin midi dress. She was one of the evening’s standout arrivals.

The dress had thin straps, a clean fitted bodice and a midi-length skirt that finished in a ruffled hem, which added movement as she posed. Silver strappy open-toe sandals completed the metallic palette. With her dark hair worn in loose waves and a soft, natural makeup look, the overall effect was simple and glamorous.
It was a very different mood from some of her past premiere looks, but a fitting one. The icy shimmer suited a film about the shining promises of a tech revolution, even if no one on the carpet seemed to be thinking about that.

Barbaro wasn’t alone. Garfield, Guadagnino, Borisov, Barinholtz and Rylance all attended the gala. Garfield wore a brown open-collared shirt with a matching jacket and round spectacles.
Together, the group made for one of the more eclectic casts on the festival circuit this year, which fits a film that has been described as both a comedy and a warning. The film runs about 140 minutes, and it sits among the festival’s galas.

The film’s journey to London was anything but smooth. Amazon MGM Studios, which developed and financed the project, dropped it in June, saying it would be better served by a different studio. Netflix, A24 and Focus reportedly passed before Neon stepped in and rescued it.

Neon has set a Christmas Day release in the US, with UK and Irish release planned for January 22, 2027. For Barbaro, the studio shuffle apparently wasn’t a source of panic. She has said she wasn’t concerned, citing the positive feedback about the film and her trust in Guadagnino.
Barbaro plays Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer at the time of the firing. She was cast shortly after her Met Gala debut in May 2025 following a meeting with Guadagnino, and she shot the film between July and October that year. For the Oscar-nominated ‘A Complete Unknown’ star, it’s her third release of 2026, following ‘Crime 101’ and ‘One Night Only.’
She has described the tone of the film as a mix of madcap comedy and horror story, which matches the early buzz. Reviewers who saw it in New York called Garfield chilling as Altman. Others have framed the film as ‘The Social Network’ of the AI generation, an expectation that adds weight to the awards conversation.

Garfield himself has said that curiosity and fear powered his performance, and the film arrives at a time when concerns about rogue AI systems are mounting. That timing could help it cut through an already crowded awards season.
If the early reception holds, Barbaro may find herself in another awards conversation after her Joan Baez breakthrough. Either way, she made sure the London premiere had its sparkle.
