‘NCIS’ Season 24 Episode 2 Recap and Ending Explained: Director DiNozzo Lets a Killer Walk
Being named director of a federal agency is supposed to change how a person works. For Tony DiNozzo, it appears to have changed almost nothing. After a premiere that ended with his surprise promotion, ‘NCIS‘ used its latest episode to show what happens when a field agent is suddenly handed the corner office.
The episode, titled ‘Clean Slate’, aired Tuesday, October 13, on CBS and streams on Paramount+. It is the first installment centered on Michael Weatherly’s Tony as director, a role he took over after Leon Vance’s death and the brief tenure of Gabriel LaRoche. The official synopsis promises a murder after a neighborhood dinner party in which every guest is lying.
Spoilers follow for the full episode and its ending.
The episode opens with Tony explaining his new approach to the team. He stages a false biohazard alarm to get everyone in one place, then tells his agents their job is to solve cases and his job is to make sure nothing gets in their way. It is a confident speech, and it does not last.
As the case develops, Tony cannot stay out of it. He tags along while the team questions suspects, and he gets so involved that everyone starts to feel uncomfortable. Eventually, the team asks McGee to talk to the new director.
The case begins at a dinner party hosted by a couple, Linda and Greg, with Naval Intelligence officer Mallory among the guests. Linda leaves to get more wine, and when she returns, her husband and the guests have been gassed unconscious. Armed men are in the house searching for something, and when they find nothing, they leave.
Later, Linda reports Greg missing, and the team finds his body in his car. She initially suspects a heart attack, but the death turns out to be a poisoning. Kasie discovers camera-equipped smart devices inside the house’s vacuum cleaner, which connects the case to the CIA.

Parker’s conversation with CIA agent Russell Cross changes the direction of the investigation. Greg, it turns out, was part of a scheme involving long-term deep-cover operatives, and the CIA had been keeping tabs on him. The agency admits it gassed the dinner guests but says it had no hand in killing him.
Footage from dog feeder supplies then reveals that Linda killed her husband. She was in on the operation, and their marriage was a cover. A medication Greg was taking threatened to expose the scheme, so Linda murdered her partner for what she saw as the greater good.
With the conspiracy exposed, all that remains is to arrest Linda. Instead, Tony stops McGee and the team. He believes Linda and the operation are part of something bigger, and that arresting her would tip off whoever is behind it.
Tony tells the team he knows something very bad is coming down the pike, something that a lot of smart people are worried about. He says he is not happy about letting her go, but that they will get her eventually. In other words, the case is not really solved, and Linda becomes bait for a larger target, a thread that is likely to carry through the season.

After the case, McGee confronts Tony about his behavior. Tony admits he knows he is acting more like an agent than a director. He explains that he feared the job could kill a person’s soul, and that catching bad guys is how he blows off steam and survives it.
Then he turns the conversation to McGee and reveals that he was not passed over for the director’s job. The Secretary of the Navy has something else in mind and wants McGee to take over her position after she retires. It is a significant reveal, and it reframes McGee’s place in the franchise.
The episode also fills in Tony’s life outside the office. He is crashing on Jimmy’s couch and likes to keep the thermostat very cold. Ziva, who remains nearby, checks in with calls, including one to Jessica to make sure Tony sticks to his diet, which keeps her present even without appearing.
Reviewers have noted that the series is giving the storyline room to breathe, while also suggesting that Ziva will eventually need to appear. Tony’s tendency to get overinvolved also raises questions about how the rest of the team, including Nick and Jessica, will adapt. For now, the friendship between Tony and McGee has picked up right where it left off.
‘NCIS’ airs Tuesdays on CBS at 8/9c. With a deep-cover spy ring still out there, a killer allowed to walk and McGee’s future in play, the season has plenty of threads to pull. Tony may be the director, but he clearly intends to keep one foot in the field.
