Gemma Chan Hopes to Return as Astrid in the ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ HBO Series
Few supporting characters from a rom-com have lingered in fans’ memories as long as Astrid Leong-Teo. Elegant, composed and quietly heartbroken, she was the character many viewers wanted more of long after the credits rolled. Now the actress who played her is addressing the question every fan has been asking.
Gemma Chan has weighed in on whether she will return for the upcoming ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ series at HBO. Speaking at the BFI London Film Festival, she said she loves the franchise and the people involved, and that Astrid holds a special place in her heart. She said she hopes to come back, but could not say more for now.
That cautious answer fits the moment. HBO announced the series only days ago, and while several original stars are confirmed, Chan is not among them. Her comment is the closest thing to a signal yet that the door may still be open.
Gemma Chan on whether or not she’s returning for the ‘CRAZY RICH ASIANS’ HBO series: "I love ‘CRAZY RICH ASIANS,’ I love the people involved. Astrid has such a special place in my heart so I hope so. I can’t say any more than that for now." https://t.co/c69depXekN

HBO has ordered an 8-episode, one-hour drama that picks up after the events of the 2018 film. Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng are set as series regulars, reprising Rachel Chu, Nick Young and Eddie Cheng. Michelle Yeoh will recur as Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original screenplay, will adapt the story for television as showrunner and executive producer, with Jon M. Chu also attached. Production is set to begin in 2027, though HBO has not announced a premiere date, an episode schedule or a full cast list. Casey Bloys, the network’s chief content officer, called the returning stars global superstars and said fans of the film and novels cannot wait for more.
Astrid’s absence from the initial announcement has not gone unnoticed. In the film, she was Nick’s cousin, a fashion icon and socialite whose marriage to Michael came apart after she discovered he was cheating. The story left her newly single and set up a possible future with Charlie Wu, played by Harry Shum Jr.
That thread was always intended to continue. Chu said after the film that a sequel would focus on Astrid and Charlie, and scenes between them had been shot for the first movie but cut for story reasons. A short mid-credits scene between the 2 remained in the theatrical release.

Chan is not the only familiar face whose status is unclear. Awkwafina, who played Rachel’s friend Peik Lin, has also not been confirmed. Observers have pointed out that the series might expand on Astrid and Charlie, recast the roles or focus instead on the next chapter for Rachel and Nick.
For now, HBO has said little beyond the main cast. That leaves the door open for additional announcements as the project moves toward production. Chan’s comments suggest the conversation may be ongoing.

When ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ premiered in 2018, it made history as the first film from a major Hollywood studio with an all-Asian cast in a long time, and it became a box office hit. It was also a defining moment for Asian representation on screen. The decision to bring it back as a series, with an expanded story drawn from Kevin Kwan’s novels, is a bet that audiences still want to spend time in that world.
Lim said the series gives the creators the chance to go deeper into the characters and settings of the books, and that it is the sequel fans have been waiting for. Telling the story over 8 episodes also means more room for characters like Astrid, whose arc was only partly explored on film. That makes her potential return even more meaningful.
There are still more questions than answers. Cast announcements, a premiere date and plot details will likely arrive as production approaches, and each one will be read closely by fans. In the meantime, even a hopeful sentence from Chan is enough to spark excitement.
Whether Astrid returns or not, the new series is already a major event for fans of the original. The glamour, the family drama and the food are all likely to be central to the adaptation. And if Chan has her way, one of its most elegant characters will be part of it.
