Few sequels have had a rougher road to the screen than the follow-up to Matt Reeves’ 2022 hit ‘The Batman‘. Fans have waited years for the Caped Crusader’s return, and every new development lands with extra weight. The latest twist is one nobody saw coming: an Oscar-winning filmmaker is stepping in to help finish the shoot.

The film has been pushed back repeatedly. It was originally slated for Oct. 2, 2026, then moved to Oct. 1, 2027, and later shifted again to Feb. 18, 2028. Cameras finally rolled in London in July, with Robert Pattinson returning as Bruce Wayne alongside Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell, and newcomers Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan and Charles Dance.

Then on Monday, Oct. 5, Deadline reported that production had paused as Reeves stepped away to deal with a family matter. Now Deadline reports that Steven Soderbergh will direct the remainder of ‘The Batman: Part II.’ Soderbergh will complete the final weeks of principal photography, while Reeves plans to take over post-production duties when he is ready.

According to the studio’s statement, Soderbergh approached Reeves as an admirer of his work and will step in with the full support of DC Studios. He and Reeves will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Reeves’ vision, and they will remain in communication until filming wraps. Reeves will not be on set for the rest of the shoot.

Reeves also clarified that he is not leaving the project, and he thanked Soderbergh for coming to his aid to finish principal photography. That framing matters, because it positions Soderbergh as a temporary collaborator rather than a replacement. The shoot resumed roughly 10 days after the pause began.

Soderbergh is an Oscar winner for 2000’s ‘Traffic’ and also directed ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ and ‘The Christophers.’ He is known for a precise, efficient style, which may be why he is well suited to a job that demands matching an established look. His admiration for Reeves’ earlier work is part of what drove him to offer help.

He told Deadline that Reeves’ work on the first film was “stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent.” He added that the goal is to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what has already been shot so Reeves can properly finish his film. In other words, this is about service to another filmmaker’s vision, not putting a personal stamp on it.

The film is still scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 18, 2028. When the pause was announced, people close to the production said it was too soon to know whether it would affect that date. An earlier delay was partly meant to give Reeves extra time in post-production, so the schedule may have some room to absorb a short break.

Resuming with Soderbergh at the helm is a positive sign for the timeline. The final weeks of principal photography are now back on track, and Reeves can return when the focus shifts to the edit. Composer Michael Giacchino is also expected to return for the score.

Pattinson has teased that the sequel will be a very different take from the first film. Reeves has also suggested it will focus more on Bruce Wayne, since the first movie was so focused on Batman. Test shots of the Batmobile driving through snow hint at a winter setting.

The film also picks up a few weeks after the events of ‘The Penguin,’ tying it to the world Reeves has been building. With a stacked cast and a famously meticulous director, expectations remain sky-high despite the turbulence.

For now, the story is less about drama and more about a filmmaker getting the support he needs to finish what he started. The industry has rallied around Reeves, and the studio’s messaging has been consistently sympathetic. That kind of backing is rare for a film of this scale.

Is Steven Soderbergh the right choice to finish The Batman: Part II?
