‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Crashes the ‘9-1-1’ Premiere Without an Invitation, and Marvel Fans Are Losing It

With just over 2 months to go until its release, ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has become the kind of movie that seems to show up everywhere. Trailers, toy reveals, theater promotions and fan theories have all been fueling a campaign that feels bigger with every passing week. Now, the Marvel epic has made an unexpected cameo in a place nobody saw coming: a primetime drama on ABC.

The surprise is a small background detail, but eagle-eyed viewers noticed it quickly. It also highlights something that has become a defining feature of Disney’s marketing machine: when a franchise is this big, its branding has a way of slipping into the world around it.

After the new season of ‘9-1-1‘ began airing on ABC on October 15, a clip started making the rounds online showing a street scene on Hollywood Boulevard. In the shot, the marquee of the El Capitan Theatre prominently displays ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, with a Disney Store and a chocolate shop visible next to it. Fans were quick to joke that everyone was getting ready for the December date.

The new season of the rescue drama opens with a massive sinkhole on a famous Los Angeles boulevard that turns into an erupting volcano, according to showrunner Tim Minear. That kind of large-scale disaster set in recognizable Los Angeles locations helps explain why a famous theater marquee ended up on screen.

The Disney connection is hard to miss. The El Capitan is a Disney-run venue on Hollywood Boulevard, and it has already announced special screenings of the film in Infinity Vision, with the first screenings on Thursday, December 17. ABC and Marvel Studios share the same parent company, which means the cross-promotion feels almost built-in.

It’s worth noting that the sources I found don’t confirm whether the placement was a deliberate promotional tie-in or simply a real-world detail captured on location. Either way, it landed with fans, who treated it like a free piece of marketing.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Declares “Doom Is Supreme” in New Promo Art as Robert Downey Jr.’s Villain Takes Over the Marketing

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who returned to the franchise after helming ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Doctor Doom in his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Tony Stark’s death in that earlier film. Filming took place from April to September 2025.

The trailer promises a collision of 3 universes, bringing together Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four characters. It features Chris Hemsworth’s Thor leading the charge, Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers, and cameos from Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden’s Cyclops and Channing Tatum’s Gambit.

The film’s promotion has been relentless. The first trailer debuted at CinemaCon in April, with a wider release in July, and a second look arrived at D23. Marvel has also rolled out character teasers, merchandise reveals and a Dunkin’ tie-in set to begin on November 4.

Disney even re-released ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in September as ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore’, complete with new footage, and that run helped the 2019 film retake the all-time box office crown. The Russos’ earlier films have made more than $7.7 billion across the 4 Avengers movies so far, which explains the high expectations.

Early demand looks strong. Disney said the film had $50 million in United States presales 3 months before release, and trackers now put worldwide presales past $100 million, which reportedly doubled that earlier figure. Fans have also filled theater calendars, with special premium screenings selling quickly.

Those numbers matter because the film is expected to be one of the biggest releases of the year, and it will face stiff competition when it opens. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is also scheduled for December 18, setting up a major year-end box office clash.

Moments like the marquee cameo show how invested the fan base is. People are scanning every frame of unrelated shows for a glimpse of Marvel branding, which is the kind of enthusiasm studios dream about. It also shows how thoroughly the film has taken over pop culture before a single ticket has been scanned in theaters.

Of course, the real test comes in December, when the movie has to deliver on the hype. For now, even a background shot is enough to get the internet talking.
