Charlie Cox Says His Young Son Was Devastated by ‘Daredevil’ News
Few Marvel characters have a fan base as loyal as Matt Murdock’s. When Netflix canceled ‘Daredevil‘ in 2018, viewers rallied for years until the Man Without Fear returned. Now the revival is coming to a close, and the news has hit hard in one very personal place.
‘Daredevil: Born Again’ premiered on Disney+ in March 2025 and will end with its upcoming third season. The announcement came during Marvel Television’s panel at New York Comic Con. For fans, it marked the end of a run that began with the original series in 2015.
Star Charlie Cox has now shared how the news landed at home. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at New York Comic Con, the 43-year-old actor said his son was devastated when he learned the show was ending. Cox admitted he had expected saying goodbye to be difficult for himself, but he never imagined how much it would affect his child.
He said the boy’s face visibly changed when he heard the news. It’s a tender moment from an actor who has often spoken about how much the role means to him. As Cox put it, “I’m trying to prepare my son for it more than I’m preparing myself.”
Cox said he isn’t sure anyone can prepare for a farewell like this. He called the role the most important of his career and noted that it has been 12 years of his life. He also estimated that he has played Daredevil for about 70 hours.
He described the experience as a gift and the great honor of his career. Cox said his son has only recently started to embrace the idea that his dad is a superhero. That makes the timing of the finale even more poignant.
Season 3 is expected to premiere on Disney+ in March 2027 and will consist of eight episodes. Filming took place between March and July 2026 and has since wrapped. Co-creator and showrunner Dario Scardapane has exited the series, which is now in post-production.
The final season picks up after the season 2 finale, in which Matt Murdock exposed his identity and was arrested. A trailer description for the new episodes shows him suiting up behind bars. The cast includes Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page and Wilson Bethel as Bullseye.

Season 3 also brings back fan favorites from the original Netflix era. Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Finn Jones and Élodie Yung are all part of the cast. At New York Comic Con, Cox joined Ritter and Jones to preview clips from the season.
Marvel Television chief Brad Winderbaum has explained that the revival was always planned as a three-season story, mirroring the original series. That framing suggests the finale is meant to be a true conclusion rather than a sudden cancellation. Many fans are still processing the news.
The numbers tell a mixed story. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ delivered the best series premiere on Disney+ for 2025, with 7.5 million viewers worldwide in its first five days. U.S. viewership then dropped by about 50% in season 2, according to Luminate data.
Critics were more consistently positive. Season 2 reviews praised it as an improvement over the first and highlighted the performances of Cox and D’Onofrio. That strong reception makes the decision to end the show feel even more bittersweet for supporters.

Even with the series ending, the door to the wider MCU appears open. Winderbaum has left room for more of Cox’s Daredevil in the future. Cox himself has hedged when pressed about what comes next.
Fans have noted that ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ could be a natural place for the character. For now, nothing has been confirmed. What is certain is that Matt Murdock’s current story is nearing its end.
For Cox, the final chapter is both a farewell and a reminder of how far the character has come. A role once thought finished in 2018 got a second life and a devoted audience. If his son’s reaction is any sign, the impact reaches far beyond the screen.
What do you think Marvel should do next?
