Few actors have spent as much time on the edge of survival on screen as Idris Elba. He has faced off against a lion in ‘Beast,’ battled through the wilderness in ‘The Mountain Between Us’ and played hardened commanders in plenty more. Now he is stepping behind the camera as well as in front of it for a survival story that takes place in two of the most hostile environments imaginable.

The film began taking shape in 2023, when Lionsgate announced it at the American Film Market with Elba and Martin Owen co-directing. Elba had made his feature directorial debut with 2018’s ‘Yardie,’ and this would be his second feature as a director. Owen, whose credits include ‘The Loneliest Boy in the World,’ came up with the original idea, and the production shot at Pinewood Studios, including the studio’s underwater stage.

Now audiences finally have a proper first look. Lionsgate has released the first trailer for ‘Above the Below,‘ and the film opens in theaters on December 4, 2026, following a poster reveal that confirmed the date and announced the trailer’s arrival.

The premise is simple and brutal. Three astronauts survive a catastrophic re-entry from space, only to find themselves trapped in a capsule sinking into the crushing depths of the ocean with their oxygen running out. As time ticks down, they face impossible choices about who will risk everything to reach the surface and who may be left behind.

The trailer opens with tense dialogue between mission commander Jackson, played by Elba, and pilot Brookes, played by Caitlin FitzGerald. It builds toward a race against the clock, and it closes with Jackson posing a question about how hard someone would fight to stay alive. One early description summed it up as ‘Gravity’ meets ‘Whalefall,’ a fitting comparison for a film that moves from the vacuum of space to the pressure of deep water.

Elba is joined by FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who plays the third astronaut, Rhodes. Isla Jackson-Ritchie is also credited in the cast. The screenplay comes from Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell and Vicki Sargent, and the film is produced by Matt Williams and Gina Carter.

The movie is also short and sharp. It runs 85 minutes and is rated R, which fits a lean, claustrophobic thriller where the tension comes from confined spaces and diminishing air. Producer Matt Williams once described it as a crazy rollercoaster of a movie that would keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

The film arrives in an interesting corner of the release calendar. It opens on the same weekend as David Harbour’s holiday action sequel ‘Violent Night 2’ and Tony Gilroy’s ‘Behemoth!,’ starring Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde. It is currently listed for a limited theatrical release, but its straightforward, high-concept premise could make it an appealing alternative to bigger holiday offerings.

That strategy suits the survival genre, which has often thrived on simple hooks and strong central performances. With a star who has proven he can carry a high-stakes story and a premise built around a ticking clock, the film has the ingredients of a tense night out at the movies.

What stands out most is the contrast. Space and the ocean are both environments where humans can’t survive without equipment, and the movie traps its characters in both. The poster reinforces the idea with an image of Elba in a spacesuit, with bubbles filling one side of the frame and stars the other.

For Elba, the project is also a chance to show what he can do as a filmmaker alongside Owen. Both have described the directing partnership as a genuine collaboration, and the trailer suggests a film with a strong visual identity.
