‘VisionQuest’ Just Name-Dropped Daredevil, and the Clue Is Hiding in Paladin’s Past
The MCU has always been at its best when its corners quietly talk to each other. A throwaway line in one series can tie into a character who lives in a very different part of the universe, and the audience rewards the effort of catching it. The latest ‘VisionQuest’ Daredevil reference is a perfect example of that kind of connective tissue.
‘VisionQuest‘ is the final chapter in a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along.’ The 8-episode Disney+ series follows Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he hunts for his identity while a bounty hunter named Paladin (Todd Stashwick) pursues him. Before the show even premiered, Paladin stood out because the character first appeared in the pages of ‘Daredevil’ #150 in 1978, created by Jim Shooter and Carmine Infantino.
Now episode 3, titled ‘Reboot,’ has paid that history off. Released Oct. 20 alongside episode 4, ‘Malware,’ it features a conversation between Paladin and his Handler, played by Diane Morgan, that reveals the hunter has clashed with 3 major Marvel characters, and Daredevil is one of them.
Spoilers for #VisionQuest – – – – – – – PALADIN FOUGHT WEREWOLF BY NIGHT AND DAREDEVIL HOLY SHIT??? I love how they’re integrating him into the universe but god now I need to see those fights more than ANYTHING https://t.co/oQLZdWKAfE

The scene works like a puzzle. The Handler reminds Paladin of a concussion he suffered from a steel fiber billy club, a clear nod to Daredevil’s signature weapon. Paladin answers with a quip about getting out of Hell’s Kitchen if you can’t take the heat, which points straight at Matt Murdock’s home turf in New York City.
The same exchange name-checks Frank Castle too. The Handler brings up the time Paladin pulled shrapnel from an IED out of his gut in Brooklyn, and he calls it a punishing disagreement with an old friend, a hint at the Punisher. It also nods to Werewolf by Night through a joke about bite marks from a thing halfway between a man and a wolf.
There is a bonus connection as well. The Handler asks whether she should send a gift basket to the Ten Rings Syndicate for providing Paladin’s adamantium chest armor, which ties the hunter to Xialing’s organization from ‘Shang-Chi.’ That detail also lines up with the adamantium rounds Paladin used against Vision in episode 2.
The Daredevil reference lands because of who is delivering it. In the comics, Paladin is a mercenary whose work frequently brings him into conflict with street-level heroes, including Spider-Man, and his design shares elements with Charlie Cox’s costume in the MCU. ‘VisionQuest’ also establishes him as ‘a Paladin’ rather than ‘the Paladin,’ the latest in a centuries-long line of hunters, which leaves plenty of room for past clashes to exist.
Screen Rant noted before the premiere that Paladin is the third Daredevil antagonist the MCU has repurposed for a story that doesn’t involve Matt Murdock. Unlike the others, though, ‘VisionQuest’ sits far from Hell’s Kitchen, so the series could easily have ignored Daredevil entirely. Instead, the writers used a single line to place Paladin in the same world as Murdock.

Charlie Cox’s Daredevil has had a busy MCU run since debuting in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ He appeared in ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ and led ‘Daredevil: Born Again,’ whose 8-episode second season aired from March to May of this year. A third season has reportedly wrapped filming and is scheduled to arrive next March.
Cox has been clear that Marvel wants him focused on that series for now. He has said he is not in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and, at a convention panel, said he is not in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ either, although he also joked that the MCU rarely gives a final answer. In that context, a verbal reference in ‘VisionQuest’ is one of the few ways to keep his character in the wider conversation without calling on the actor.

For the Disney+ series itself, the story is only halfway through. ‘VisionQuest’ continues weekly, with ‘Firewall’ and ‘Deadlock’ on Oct. 27, ‘Immolation’ on Nov. 3 and the finale, ‘Forever,’ on Nov. 10. Paladin’s mysterious client is still unidentified, and the more his past unfolds, the more his backstory seems to connect with the rest of the MCU.
