‘VisionQuest’ Sneaks the Ten Rings and ‘Werewolf by Night’ Into One Conversation
Marvel’s Disney+ shows have a habit of hiding connective tissue in plain sight. A single line of dialogue can tie a brand-new series to a corner of the MCU that seemed completely unrelated, and ‘VisionQuest‘ has just done it twice in one scene. The latest ‘VisionQuest’ Easter eggs reach from a global crime syndicate to one of Marvel’s strangest Halloween specials.
The series is the final chapter of the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along.’ It follows Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he hides from a bounty hunter named Paladin (Todd Stashwick), who has been hired by a mysterious client. Premiering Oct. 13, it runs for 8 episodes and wraps with a finale on Nov. 10.
Episode 3, titled ‘Reboot,’ arrived Oct. 20 alongside episode 4, ‘Malware.’ In it, Paladin trades war stories with his Handler, played by Diane Morgan, and the conversation drops references to the Ten Rings Syndicate and to ‘Werewolf by Night,’ along with nods to the Punisher and Daredevil.
The Ten Rings reference is tied directly to Paladin’s gear. The Handler jokes about sending a gift basket to the Ten Rings Syndicate for providing his adamantium chest armor. It’s a clever way to explain where a mercenary gets such a rare metal, and it suggests that his network includes some of the MCU’s biggest organizations.
That organization has a recent history of change. In ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) takes over the group in a post-credits scene, training women alongside men even though she told her brother she would disband it. A sequel to the film is in development, so a nod in ‘VisionQuest’ keeps Xialing’s version of the syndicate in the conversation.
The detail also connects to a larger thread. Adamantium was introduced to the MCU in ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ where it was discovered on Celestial Island, and Paladin has been using adamantium rounds to wound Vision in the series. Having the Ten Rings as a supplier suggests that the metal is already moving through criminal networks.

The second reference is a creature feature. The Handler mentions bite marks from a thing halfway between a man and a wolf, and Paladin quips that it was a perfectly reasonable fellow by day. That is a clear nod to Jack Russell, the title character of ‘Werewolf by Night.‘
That special arrived on Disney+ on Oct. 7, 2022, as Marvel Studios’ first Special Presentation. Directed by Michael Giacchino, it is a black-and-white homage to classic Universal horror films, with Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, a werewolf who keeps his human intelligence, and Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone. A fully colored version followed on Oct. 20, 2023.
The timing is a treat. With Halloween only days away, the mention lands just as the special tends to resurface, and the same scene also references the Punisher and Daredevil, making it one of the busiest bits of dialogue in the MCU this year.

These references work because of Paladin’s design. In the series, he is ‘a Paladin’ rather than ‘the Paladin,’ the latest in a long line of hunters who work for the highest bidder. That lineage means his past can plausibly include run-ins with just about any corner of Marvel’s world.
It also fits the character’s comic book roots. Paladin first appeared in ‘Daredevil’ #150 in 1978 and has long been a mercenary who frequently runs into street-level heroes, so a backstory built from encounters with Daredevil, the Punisher and the supernatural makes sense.
Whether any of these threads pay off remains to be seen. The series has not revealed who hired Paladin, and Marvel has not announced whether Jack Russell will return to the MCU. Even so, the scene is a reminder that a bounty hunter with a long memory is a very useful way to connect an increasingly sprawling universe.
‘VisionQuest’ continues weekly on Disney+ with ‘Firewall’ and ‘Deadlock’ on Oct. 27, ‘Immolation’ on Nov. 3 and the finale, ‘Forever,’ on Nov. 10.
