‘Chicago Fire‘ has never been shy about putting Firehouse 51 through the wringer, and this season has leaned hard into the fallout from a devastating warehouse blaze. Every member of the house survived the fire, but surviving has come at a real cost for the team.

Joe Cruz suffered a major spinal injury that hints he may never work as a firefighter again, and Kelly Severide has taken command of the house. Cruz is on his way out of the show for good, with his exit still a couple of episodes away, which gives every scene with him extra weight.

The latest hour, ‘Take the Hit’, delivers a double dose of drama, with a workplace mistake on one side and a friend in crisis on the other. A chemical fire at a warehouse sends firefighter Tony to the hospital after someone ignores clear warnings and grabs a gas valve, causing a pressure surge. At the same time, Herrmann grows worried because Cruz has stopped returning his calls.

Severide and Kidd gather all 4 probies and ask them to come clean, but nobody steps forward. Suspicion swings toward Marcus Burke, whose renegade image and secret visit to Gaffney make him a convenient suspect, though he denies it.

Kidd and Severide keep digging, and they find rust on the gloves of one of the probies, who turns out to be McCaffrey. Confronted, McCaffrey dodges blame and phones his father, an Illinois state senator.

A CFD chief soon shows up to coach Severide on handling his candidates, a nudge clearly influenced by political pressure. It lands awkwardly, because Severide and Kidd had been ready to spare McCaffrey as a first time offender, and Cruz had even advised letting it pass. McCaffrey’s refusal to own his mistake changes everything.

The emotional core of the hour belongs to Cruz. He hasn’t left his house all week and is refusing physical therapy, which is dangerous for his recovery. When Herrmann visits and stresses that his family needs him, Cruz lashes out and drives him away.

Herrmann leaves Otis’ old cane behind, and Cruz later throws it back at him at the station. The turning point comes when Herrmann finds Cruz at the firehouse doing busy work and Cruz admits that after the collapse, all he could feel was his heart pounding and his mind racing. It is a raw, honest moment, and it finally breaks through.

The ending ties the threads together. Severide and Kidd announce that McCaffrey has been cut from the CFD, and he leaves warning them it is not over and that he will return. He also needles Burke about the wall he builds and the fact that nobody at the station truly knows him.

That jab sets up the episode’s quietest reveal. Burke’s father is comatose in the hospital, which explains his guarded and isolated behavior, and it reframes his refusal to visit Tony as something much more personal. As for Cruz, he goes back to physical therapy and starts making strides, giving the episode a hopeful note before his exit.

McCaffrey’s threat, combined with his father’s political reach, looks like a real headache for Severide’s new command. Firing a well connected probie was the right call on principle, but it may not be the last the house hears of it.

Not everyone is sold on the storyline. Some viewers found the culprit twist predictable, and felt the show reached for a familiar arc instead of something fresh. Even so, Cruz’s recovery and Burke’s backstory give the episode real heart.
