‘The Lowdown‘ has never been a show that lets Lee Raybon keep his life simple. The Tulsa “truthstorian” started this season by winning a Citizen Journalist of the Year award, only to find his estranged father, Lee Sr., walking back into town.

On top of the family chaos, Lee has been helping public defender Ginger, played by Betty Gilpin, track down a missing client named Mekko. The previous episode ended with Lee fleeing through the woods after a former prison guard was killed, which left both him and the case in a dangerous spot.

The latest hour, ‘Truth’s Easy’, picks up in the aftermath and delivers a final twist that puts Lee and his stepfamily on a collision course with the law. It starts with Lee stumbling out of the woods and getting a ride from a kindly driver named Dale, played by Steve Earle. Dale’s coffee mug reads “Truth’s Easy”, and his simple philosophy that lying isn’t worth the trouble becomes Lee’s mantra for the rest of the episode.

Back at his van, Lee discovers a pile of messages from Ginger, then gets a call that his daughter Francis is at Sweet Emily’s with Frog. He gets her away from her grandfather first, then meets up with Ginger and tells her Mekko must have escaped prison. Ginger doesn’t believe he could have vanished that fast, so the pair visit Mekko’s uncle, Otis, played by Gary Farmer.

Otis says Mekko showed up at his house the previous week in the middle of the night, and that he gave him food and clothes before Mekko disappeared again. Ginger senses something is off, so she and Lee follow Otis to a hospital. There they meet Mekko Jr. and his mother, Angie.

Ginger had no idea Mekko had a son, which stings given how close she thought they were. Angie says Mekko seemed ready to go after someone, angry about being left alone with a dead kid for hours. Records show no recent death at the prison, though a 19-year-old named Nathan Spence did die in a county jail, which Ginger dismisses as an entirely different place.

Lee confronts his father at the bookstore, where Frog says he only wants to get to know his granddaughter. Lee remains suspicious, and it emerges that he once had his dad committed. That backstory has clearly left a mark.

Dinner at Samantha and Johnny’s home goes no better, because Francis is furious that Lee lied about her grandfather being dead. Johnny offers a story about his own dad missing a baseball game, which falls far short of what Lee endured. Lee steps away from the table, overwhelmed.

Outside, Lee spots a shadow in the yard and gives chase. It turns out to be Lonnie, the man Ginger shot last week, now bandaged and armed, and he gets the better of Lee in the fight. Johnny steps in with some karate skills and chokes him unconscious.

Then comes the twist. When Johnny checks the man’s wallet, he discovers Lonnie is a deputy sheriff, and he panics at the thought of having choked out a cop. The episode fades out with Lee confused and sporting a chipped tooth.

Lonnie being a deputy suggests that law enforcement is mixed up in Mekko’s disappearance and whatever he saw at the jail. It also explains why someone has been following Ginger and Lee. Neither has realized it until now.

The twist also hits Lee at home, which is exactly where he is most vulnerable. Speaking to TV Insider, Ethan Hawke said, “It’s really cliché how much in stories that the stepparent is a threat to the parent.” That makes Johnny’s rescue feel even more fitting, since the show has treated him as an ally and not a rival.

Meanwhile, a subplot involving Marty could connect in ways the show hasn’t revealed. After faking a back injury at an archaeological dig Lee handed off to him, Marty hears from a man named Ray about connections to rich buyers of illicit artifacts, who are dubbed the Oklahoma Illuminati. It wouldn’t be ‘The Lowdown’ without some nefarious power players lurking in the background.
