‘Abbott Elementary‘ has spent years proving that a quirky workplace comedy about underfunded Philadelphia teachers can become a network staple. The mockumentary has piled up 30 Emmy nominations and became one of the most acclaimed sitcoms on television, with creator Quinta Brunson leading the cast as the endlessly optimistic Janine Teagues.

That success set up a dramatic fifth season finale, in which the School District of Philadelphia nearly closed Abbott before reversing its decision. Students from the schools that did close are now headed to Abbott, and Gregory has stepped up as assistant principal to help manage the influx. The newest season trailer also showed Melissa as a teachers’ union representative, which promised even more chaos in the halls.

Now the numbers are in, and they show viewers were eager to head back to class. According to Variety, the season premiere reached 6.3 million viewers across all platforms after 7 days, the show’s strongest performance in a year. The premiere aired on ABC on October 7.

The audience size is only part of the story. The episode earned a 2.07 rating among adults 18 to 49, the highest in more than 18 months, and no ‘Abbott Elementary’ episode had topped it since a March 2025 installment. It also marked the show’s best 7-day audience since the third episode of last season, which aired a year earlier.

Compared with the season average from last year, the premiere drew 7% more viewers, up from 5.9 million, and its rating was 16% higher, up from 1.79. Those are solid gains for a series now in its sixth year, when many sitcoms are expected to cool off.

A big reason for the jump was delayed viewing. On the night of broadcast alone, the premiere brought in 2.2 million viewers and a 0.33 rating, which means streaming and other platforms added 183% more total viewers and a staggering 527% more in the key demo.

The premiere also posted the show’s best 7-day streaming viewership since a January 2025 episode, which was the big crossover with ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’. That is a notable comparison, since that crossover drew more than 8 million viewers in its first week. It suggests that Hulu and Disney+ viewers are still a major engine behind the show’s success.

For ABC, the premiere is an important early win in a crowded fall schedule. The network has treated ‘Abbott Elementary’ as a reliable anchor, and it was the network’s first scripted series renewed for the new season, announced with a voicemail from Sheryl Lee Ralph’s Barbara Howard. The show has also ranked as television’s top comedy among adults 18 to 49 in multiplatform viewing over 7 days.

The strong start also arrives as the series passes a major landmark of 100 episodes. Cast members said ahead of the premiere that everything about this season is bigger, from the emotions to the plot twists and the laughs. Director Randall Einhorn even teased that the first episode might include some famous Philly names.

With the audience back in force, the show has momentum going into a long season of 22 half-hour episodes. Brunson and showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker will need to keep that energy alive as storylines like Gregory’s new role and the school’s growing student body play out. A possible proposal between Janine and Gregory, hinted at in last season’s finale, remains a major thread fans are watching.

The numbers don’t guarantee anything, but they show that Abbott’s appeal hasn’t faded. After a year of steady viewing, the show has proven it can still deliver a premiere that feels like an event.
