Callina Liang Turns Up the Heat: From Chun-Li’s Lightning Kicks to a Smoldering Satin Shoot for ‘Behind The Blinds’

Callina Liang has spent the better part of the past year proving she can throw a punch. To step into the role of Chun-Li, the Canadian actress trained for 2 hours a day in taekwondo, Muay Thai and wushu, then ramped up to 4 hours daily for 6 weeks before the action cameras rolled.

The commitment extended well beyond the gym. Liang followed a high-calorie, high-protein plan that reportedly included 12 eggs a day, and by the end of production, each of her thighs had grown by about 6.5 centimeters. It was the kind of physical overhaul that helped her stand out as one of the most talked-about faces of ‘Street Fighter’, which hit theaters on October 16.

Now the spotlight has moved from the fighting arena to the editorial studio. Liang covers the latest issue of Behind The Blinds magazine, with photography credited to Jason Renaud, in a moody black and white shoot that has quickly drawn attention online. The images are a sharp contrast to the battle-worn Chun-Li audiences have been watching on screen.

The cover shows Liang reclining against dark cushions in a satin slip dress, her long dark hair falling loose past her shoulders. A second frame shifts the mood completely, with her hair pinned into a loose, tousled updo as she glances toward the camera, a dark oversized jacket draped off her shoulders over the same slip.

It is a soft, cinematic look, built on shadow, texture and quiet confidence. Fans have praised the editorial polish, with some arguing that it shows real fashion potential. Her press tour has consistently leaned into glamorous looks that sit at the opposite end of the spectrum from the gritty fighter she plays, and this shoot is the fullest expression of that yet.

The contrast is hard to miss. Behind-the-scenes photos from the ‘Street Fighter’ set showed Liang in the character’s blue qipao-style costume, spiked wristbands and signature hair buns, with the outfit torn and dirty and bruising makeup suggesting a rough fight. Seeing both versions circulating at once is part of the appeal.

It also underlines how fast her profile has risen. Liang, who is 26, first drew attention for her leading role opposite Lucy Liu in Steven Soderbergh’s supernatural thriller ‘Presence’, which made her one of the breakouts of Sundance. She also starred in the heist thriller ‘Bad Genius’ and appeared in the ITVX teen drama ‘Tell Me Everything’ before landing the part of Chun-Li.

The timing of the cover is no accident. ‘Street Fighter’, directed by Kitao Sakurai and also starring Noah Centineo as Ken and Andrew Koji, won its opening weekend, and the film has reportedly earned $51 million globally. Not every outlet is convinced of its long-term legs, since forecasts for its second weekend sit between $8 million and $13 million, and it is facing unexpected competition from an A24 documentary.

Even so, Liang has been at the center of the conversation throughout. Landing a fashion-forward cover this soon after a breakout role suggests that she is being seen as more than a video game adaptation actress. Whether the film builds on its opening or fades quickly, her Chun-Li has already left a lasting impression.

For an actress whose career has moved from indie thrillers to a major studio action lead in a short time, the magazine cover feels like another step in a bigger plan. It shows range, with the same performer who spent weeks perfecting spinning kicks now commanding a quiet, intimate portrait.
