Few book-to-screen adaptations arrive with as much built-in curiosity as ‘Verity’. Colleen Hoover’s 2018 psychological thriller has been a bestseller for years, and when Amazon MGM Studios finally turned it into a film with Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, readers and newcomers alike lined up to see how the twisted story would play on screen.

The movie, directed by Michael Showalter from a screenplay by Nick Antosca, opened in theaters on October 2 after a release date shift from its original May slot. It follows Johnson’s Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to finish the bestselling book series of Hathaway’s Verity Crawford, who is left unable to move or speak after an accident.

Now, viewers who missed it in theaters have a date to circle. ‘Verity‘ will arrive on digital platforms on October 27, less than a month after its theatrical debut, and it will be available to buy or rent on platforms including Amazon Video and iTunes.

The quick turnaround is typical for a studio release that has already done its theatrical work. Digital rental and purchase usually arrives before a film lands on a subscription service, and Amazon’s store, which sits separately from the Prime subscription catalog, is the natural home for it.

Amazon MGM has not announced when ‘Verity’ will stream on Prime Video for subscribers. Based on the studio’s recent releases, which have taken roughly two to four months to reach the service, the estimated window points to late December 2026 or January 2027, though that is projection rather than confirmation.

Anne Hathaway Takes a Side in the Great ‘Verity’ Letter vs. Manuscript Debate

The home release follows a strong theatrical run. ‘Verity’ opened to $32.6 million domestically from 3,510 screens, taking the top spot and landing well ahead of the opening for ‘Reminders of Him’, which debuted at about $18 million earlier this year. It also made a splash worldwide, with a $62.6 million global opening, and has since grossed about $145.3 million against a $40 million budget.

That performance came despite weak reviews. The film holds a 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 43 on Metacritic, which indicates a mixed reception, but audiences turned out anyway, and it opened the same weekend that Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ struggled.

The result adds to the author’s growing track record on screen. ‘It Ends with Us’ earned $351 million worldwide, ‘Regretting You’ made about $90 million and ‘Reminders of Him’ took in roughly $89 million, all on modest budgets and often with rough reviews.

‘Verity’ fits that pattern, and it cements Hoover as a reliable draw at the box office. It also marks a comeback of sorts for Johnson, whose biggest recent hit was ‘Materialists’, and a reunion between Hathaway and Showalter after ‘The Idea of You’.

A thriller built on secrets and uncertainty is well suited to a second viewing. The story keeps viewers guessing about what is real, from Verity’s condition to the hidden manuscript Lowen discovers, and the film leans into the unreliable nature of its characters.

The film is rated R for sexual content, language, violence and bloody images, and runs about 1 hour and 54 minutes, which makes it an easy fit for a night at home. Those who read the book may also enjoy comparing how the film handles the novel’s ambiguous ending.

Blu-ray and DVD editions have not been formally announced. Based on the studio’s typical rollout, physical releases are expected roughly three to four months after the theatrical debut, which would put them around January 2027, though that remains an estimate.

For now, the digital release on October 27 is the next big milestone for the film, and it should give the thriller a second chance to find an audience.
