Robert Downey Jr.’s “Accidental” Instagram Follow Becomes Doctor Doom’s Funniest Promo Move Yet
Marketing campaigns for tentpole movies usually run on trailers, posters and carefully timed teasers. ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has added something less predictable to that mix, which is the personal Instagram account of its villain. The Robert Downey Jr. Instagram follow story is the latest sign that the star is treating his social feed as part of the campaign.
Downey, who returns to the MCU as Doctor Doom in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ has spent months turning his account into a running bit. He posted a picture of the comic ‘DOOM’ #1 alongside items labeled as “Doom workstation essentials.” He has also marked holidays with Doom-themed posts, including a Valentine’s Day mask filled with chocolates, a Mother’s Day image tied to Doom’s mother and a Thanksgiving image of Iron Man and Doctor Doom pulling a wishbone.
His latest moment is arguably the most delightful of all. A Marvel fan page posted that Downey had followed it back on Instagram, with a caption saying it was maybe by accident but still meant so much. That’s where things took a turn.
Robert accidentally followed a fan account on instagram 😂 but Doom makes no mistakes ( or does he? ) 💅🏻 https://t.co/6Jq13uhQlS

Downey didn’t stay quiet. In a pinned comment under the fan page’s post, he replied fully in character, insisting that Doom simply doesn’t make mistakes. The comment racked up more than 51,000 likes, while the original post collected tens of thousands of likes of its own.
The exchange didn’t stay on Instagram for long. Screenshots spread quickly, and fans declared that Downey had officially begun his part of the ‘Doomsday’ promo by following fan pages. One Doom-dedicated page compared the energy to the hype of the Infinity Saga era.
rdj has already started his part of doom promo on insta by following fan pages we are infinity saga levels back https://t.co/hY9VfVXoGB

This isn’t the first time Downey’s posts have sent fans into theory mode. In July, he shared the film’s poster with an ominous caption saying Doom doesn’t knock, and it arrived alongside the release of the first full trailer. The poster showed Doctor Doom in front of a tapestry depicting a woman and child, which led fans to theorize that Doom’s motives may be tied to a loss.
Another post became what The Direct called perhaps the most talked-about Doom-related post of his campaign. Fans treated it as an Easter egg hunt, and it ultimately led to the confirmation of the different Marvel teams facing Doom in the film. It also gave fans the first major hint that a version of Spider-Man would appear.
It’s a remarkable change from a few years ago. In 2021, fans panicked when Downey unfollowed all of his MCU co-stars on his verified Instagram account. He was following only 43 people at the time, none of them actors, and he appeared to be using the account to promote causes like his FootPrint Coalition.
Now the account is firmly part of the Marvel machine. Downey has more than 58 million followers, and his Instagram jumped by more than 1.1 million followers after the Comic-Con announcement that he would play Doom. The mix of humor and menace has made it a gift for a fan base that loves to dissect every detail.
It also fits the character. Doom’s whole persona is built on confidence and control, so a “mistake” that turns out to be a deliberate act is exactly in line with how the character carries himself. The actor clearly enjoys keeping fans guessing, and Marvel hasn’t confirmed any of the theories that his posts have inspired.

The promotional push is accelerating as the film gets closer. A special look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ airs tonight during Game 1 of the World Series on FOX at 8 p.m. ET, and fans are watching Marvel’s countdown clock for any further changes. The film opens in theaters on December 18, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following a year later.
If Downey’s Instagram is any indication, there will be plenty more moments before then. Whether he follows more fan pages or posts another Doom-themed holiday image, the campaign is clearly meant to be part of the fun.
Was Robert Downey Jr.’s Instagram follow a genuine accident or a clever Doctor Doom promo move?
