‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ Episodes 7-9 Recap & Ending Explained: Korra’s Cataclysm and Jae’s Shocking Betrayal
The expansion of the Avatar Legends universe on Paramount+ has taken viewers across an ambitious narrative threshold that few could have predicted. Franchise creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko chose to reinvent their fantasy world by diving headfirst into post-apocalyptic terrain. In ‘Avatar: Seven Havens’, the traditional serenity of elemental balance has been replaced by barren wastelands and fortified city-states fighting for survival.
Following the legacy of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender‘ and ‘The Legend of Korra’, the sequel faces massive creative expectations. Rather than leaning on simple nostalgia, the series takes place 225 years into the future, where humanity survives across seven isolated sanctuaries. Within this bleak era, the historic mantle of the Avatar is no longer revered as a savior, but reviled as the catastrophic cause of global ruin.
That ideological tension reaches a boiling point across the dramatic midseason batch comprising Chapters seven through nine of ‘Book 1: Survival’. Between unearthing forgotten subterranean technology and suffering an agonizing political collapse, twin Avatars Pavi and Nisha find their fragile refuge fractured. The three-episode drop completely alters the franchise’s trajectory, teasing truths behind the apocalyptic Cataclysm while delivering a devastating internal betrayal.
Unearthing the Cataclysm in “What Lies Beneath”
Chapter seven, titled “What Lies Beneath”, begins with Pavi attempting to connect with the pulsating red diamond Anomaly threatening the haven of Ellora. By blasting open the crystalline growth, Team Avatar uncovers cavernous tunnels containing a manufacturing plant originally built by Asami Sato. Deep in the facility, Pavi touches an illuminated pool that thrusts her into a vivid flashback of Republic City.
The vision turns grim when Korra appears in the Avatar State with a malevolent smirk, tearing apart conduit towers and releasing destructive violet energy. Addressing the mysterious cataclysm, DiMartino in an interview with CBR noted, “So we kind of knew what had taken place, what caused the cataclysm, so we took some of those ideas and wove them into the series”. While the memory seems to validate Ellora’s anti-Avatar dogma, critical gaps in the flashback suggest an external force was corrupting the tragedy.
The Diplomatic Summit and the Seven Chakras
Tensions escalate in Chapter eight, “The Envoys: Part One”, as Ellora hosts foreign diplomats from rival settlements including New Ba Sing Se and Akasha. The arrival of secret White Lotus delegates forces Nisha to undergo clandestine trials to determine her Avatar capabilities. Meanwhile, airbender Jae struggles between his loyalty to the Bending Brigade and his growing bond with the twins.

The summit erupts into violence during Chapter nine, “The Envoys: Part Two”, when the renegade group known as the Faceless stages an attack. To protect innocent lives, Nisha openly reveals her multi-element bending before the delegates, permanently exposing her hidden identity. Simultaneously, Pavi communes with the Anomaly, which transports her into a cosmic expanse where a red gate appears beside six unlit rings.
This celestial vision confirms a major fan theory that the seven havens represent the world’s blocked spiritual chakras. Because the red gate symbolizes the root chakra dealing with fear, the sisters must unlock every haven to restore balance. Unfortunately, the visiting envoys immediately withdraw their aid, leaving Ellora to face growing catastrophe alone.
Ending Explained: Jae’s Betrayal and the Fate of Ellora
The climax of episode nine delivers a heartbreaking blow when Jae turns against his companions to preserve Ellora’s social order. Bound by lifelong anti-Avatar conditioning, Jae exposes the White Lotus to Chancellor Kayoko, resulting in Commander Karthik’s arrest. In exchange, Jae is appointed the new Brigade Commander, while a devastated Nisha escapes into the wasteland.
Despite the betrayal, sharp-eyed fans noticed Jae scratching his ear during his testimony, which was previously established as his tell when lying. Discussing the deliberate narrative puzzles, DiMartino explained speaking to Animation Magazine, “One of the aspects of the show is the mystery. There are things in the show that link to the other series in ways that we will not reveal yet, but it definitely will build off of Korra, the events of Korra, things that happen in between Korra and the time we come into Seven Havens”.
With Chancellor Kayoko placing Ellora under martial law, the twin Avatars enter the remaining four episodes of the season isolated and pursued. While Nisha navigates the barren wilderness, Pavi remains trapped behind walled fortifications, setting the stage for an explosive conclusion to ‘Book 1: Survival’. The midseason finale effectively redefines the series, transforming an elemental survival story into a desperate battle for historical truth.
Do you believe Jae genuinely betrayed the White Lotus, or is he playing a dangerous undercover game to protect the Avatar?
