‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Season 2 Episode 6 Recap and Ending Explained: ‘Small Mercies’ Spares Black Jack Randall, Costs Ellen Her Baby and Closes on a Glimmer of Hope
Prequels live and die by their callbacks, and ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ has been dropping them for weeks. The Jacobite rising has pulled the MacKenzies, the Frasers and the Beauchamps into history, and every battle leaves a mark that fans of the original show will recognize. This week, that history arrived in a very big way.
The episode, ‘Small Mercies,’ aired October 23 on Starz and sits at the halfway point of a 10-episode season that runs through November 20. It follows the Battle of Sheriffmuir and delivers answers, heartbreak and one reveal that will make longtime viewers wince.
The ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ ending explained comes down to a quiet moment of connection after an hour of loss. As the episode closes, Arch Bug helps Henry and his ‘faerie wife’ Julia reach each other by the stone fence at Leathers, and the camera slowly zooms in on the rock. After so much tragedy, it’s the small mercy the title promises.
The episode begins with Julia and Davina burying Seema, who had planned to kill Julia and raise William and Henry as her own. Davina explains that she took baby William to the faeries’ well to remove the curse from an ill-wish doll Seema had left in his cradle. Julia is shaken by taking a life, but Davina points out it was self-defense.
Their grief is interrupted when they return to Castle Leathers and find Lord Lovat home. He claims he took Inverness without bloodshed, and he doesn’t believe the lie that Seema ran off.
Balloch had brought Ellen to Leathers, and Lovat reframes the abduction as a rescue. He urges her to stay and share a meal, and she soon begins to pale. Julia notices that Lovat left with his glass full and stops Ellen from drinking more, but it’s too late.
When confronted, Lovat admits the wine was poisoned to leave Ellen and Julia infertile, because another Fraser child could threaten William’s destiny. It’s a chilling case of a man protecting his family by destroying someone else’s. Ellen begins losing blood and reveals to Davina and Julia that she is pregnant, and she miscarries. Davina takes her back to Castle Leoch.
At Leoch, Grace tells Colum and Ned that Ellen was abducted. Colum seems more concerned that her death would put the land back in his hands, and he says he can’t afford the price of loving her anymore. Ned is furious, though one recap argues the real issue is that Colum feels powerless.
When Ellen arrives in distress, Colum is not allowed to see her. The moment leaves the emotional damage from Lovat’s actions hanging over Leoch.

Meanwhile, Dougal has been captured and held at Fort William, where he’s tortured alongside Angus. Water begins to rise in the vault, and Angus tells Dougal that Rupert and his son will at least have each other, a line that hits hard for fans of the flagship show. Angus doesn’t survive.
Brian and Murtagh reach them by quietly killing soldiers along the way. Before they leave, Lord Grey stops the sergeant from further harming Dougal and calls him Randall, revealing him as the man who will one day torment Jamie.
The big moment comes when Dougal is about to kill Randall. At Brian’s urging, he spares him, and that mercy has a bitter irony. One reviewer notes that Dougal’s decision lets a future version of one of ‘Outlander’s’ most dangerous figures live.
Sam Retford, who plays Dougal, has joked in an interview about apologizing to Sam Heughan for what his character did by letting Randall go. It’s a funny aside that underlines how big the moment is for the franchise.

The episode balances darkness with compassion. Ellen miscarries, Seema is buried and Angus dies, yet Dougal spares a life, Arch agrees to help Henry and Julia and Henry stays connected despite the circumstances. These gestures don’t undo the damage, but they show that hope and tragedy can coexist.
In next week’s teaser, Bug tells Henry he should have run when he had the chance, and the seer says death’s call must be answered. With Lovat’s secret now exposed and Ellen recovering, the second half of the season is set to be darker.
Did Dougal make the right decision by sparing Black Jack Randall?
