‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Hondo Turns the Mole Hunt on Its Head as Malik Flips Against His Handler
Spinoffs often spend their first few episodes setting up a mystery they plan to stretch across an entire season. ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ has done the opposite. At the halfway point of its first season, the Starz series has already burned through the big question hanging over Hondo’s squad and is rushing toward the next one.
The show follows Shemar Moore’s Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson after a botched raid killed a young operator named Nico Reyes and pushed him out of the job. Two years later, he’s offered one chance at redemption: leading an experimental unit of talented but unpredictable officers the department doesn’t know what to do with. It spun out of the original CBS series, which ended its 8-season run in 2025.
The ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ ending explained comes down to a turn in the mole hunt. By the end of ‘Molotov Cocktail Attire,’ Malik hasn’t just been exposed as the squad’s leak, he has been turned against his handler. It’s a faster payoff than most viewers expected, and it changes the shape of the season.
The mole storyline has been building for weeks. In episode 3, ‘Burn Zone,’ Hondo’s own secret came out: he had falsified an after-action report to protect Sammy, who froze during an earlier operation. By the end of that hour, he realized the leak had to come from inside his own squad.
Episode 4 took the next step. Ethan secretly kept drone footage that was supposed to be destroyed, and Hondo used the idea of decisive footage to bait the traitor. The playback showed Malik sneaking into a dark office to steal a memory drive, intending to hand it to mayoral chief of staff Miranda Seitzmeier. Rather than confront him, Hondo stayed silent.
Episode 5 opens with Hondo making his move. Malik, played by Adain Bradley, gets a call from his handler, who is Miranda, and she wants to meet him before his shift. But when he steps out of his house, Hondo is waiting and offers him a ride.
During the drive, Hondo tells Malik there’s a mole in the unit but says he doesn’t know who it is. He demotes him from the Scout role on the pretext of smoking out the traitor, and he points suspicion at Cassidy, who had reported him to the review board. Malik buys it, which makes the whole conversation deliciously ironic.

The squad’s assignment is a special detail. The 44-Squad is tapped to protect a foreign dignitary at a summit with Bolivian leaders, and the job turns out to hide a professional hit inside a protest operation. A gala setting gives the episode a glamorous dress-up feel, and a shocking murder causes chaos.
The case does more than fill an hour. It forces the team into close quarters, and it gives Hondo cover to watch Malik while he’s meeting his handler on the sly. At one point, Hondo spots them together and gets Ethan to call a burner phone, which shows how carefully he’s setting the trap.
The show doesn’t let the mole story drag on. Instead of keeping Malik in the shadows for several more episodes, it turns him against Miranda, the person pulling the strings at City Hall. That reframes the central question from who betrayed the squad to who wants the unit to fail, and why.
It also gives Malik a more complicated role. He’s a mole who has been betrayed by his own side, and that vulnerability could make him the most interesting character in the series. Hondo has chosen to use him rather than punish him, which says a lot about how he sees second chances.

Away from the mole hunt, the episode builds out the squad’s relationships. One reviewer notes that Sam and Jude’s dynamic feels more authentic than expected, and the glamorous setting gives several characters room to show new sides. One squad member is honored by the assignment but feels conflicted about it.
The mission itself ends happily, but Hondo isn’t satisfied. He knows the real fight is at City Hall, and the person he’s up against isn’t going to stand down.
The season has 10 episodes and runs through November 27, with new installments arriving on Fridays on Starz. The series premiered September 25 and has already been renewed for a second season. The cast includes Ronen Rubinstein as Jude, Freddy Miyares as Ethan, Zyra Gorecki as Cassidy, Adain Bradley as Malik and Lucy Barrett as Sammy.
With the mole exposed and Malik turned, the second half of the season is free to focus on the conspiracy behind the unit. It’s a bold choice for a spinoff, and it suggests the writers want to keep surprising viewers.
Can Malik be trusted after turning against his handler in 'S.W.A.T. Exiles'?
