The New ‘X-Men’ Cast Is Reportedly Almost Complete, but the Biggest Mutant Questions Are Still Unanswered

Marvel’s mutants have been waiting a long time for their return. Since Disney regained the rights, fans have debated who should lead the team, which characters belong in the first film and how the studio would handle a property with so much history. Each rumor has felt like a puzzle piece.

Now another piece may have arrived. After months of speculation and a major reveal at D23 in August, the casting machine appears to be nearing its end. If that’s true, the next stage of Marvel’s mutant era could come into focus sooner than expected.

A new report claims the cast of ‘X-Men‘ is almost complete. Marvel hasn’t confirmed any additional castings, and the report doesn’t come with names, so it should be treated as a rumor. Still, it fits the pattern of a project that has been moving steadily toward production.

The official lineup was unveiled on stage at D23 on August 15 by Kevin Feige, along with director Jake Schreier and star Sadie Sink. Sink plays Jean Grey, a role she first appeared in during ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ and Kit Connor plays Cyclops. Christopher Abbott is Professor X, Samara Weaving is Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette is Rogue and Maya Boyd is Storm.

Adam Driver also joined as the villain Mister Sinister, also known as Nathaniel Essex. Navarrette is a breakout from ‘Obsession,’ and Boyd comes from Broadway, where she led ‘& Juliet.’ Feige cautioned that the lineup wasn’t complete.

Several key mutants haven’t been cast. Reports say Magneto, Mystique, Beast, Quicksilver, Kitty Pryde and a new Wolverine are among the roles still open. That’s a long list, and it includes some of the franchise’s most important characters.

Beast has been a particular focus of speculation. Names like Charles Melton, Peter Claffey, Jesse Plemons and Daniel Radcliffe have all been mentioned by scoopers and fan-casters, but Marvel hasn’t confirmed anyone. Because the studio is leaning toward younger actors for the core team, the role may follow that trend.

The film is directed by Schreier, who previously made ‘Thunderbolts*.’ Deadline reported that ‘Beef’ creator Lee Sung Jin and ‘The Bear’ showrunner Joanna Calo are writing the script. It’s set to arrive on May 5, 2028, and takes place after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

That timeline matters. The new team is separate from the original mutants who appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and the new cast won’t share the same history as Sink’s Jean or Connor’s Cyclops in the main MCU timeline. That gives the film freedom to start fresh.

Before the reboot, Marvel is bringing back familiar faces in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Patrick Stewart returns as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Kelsey Grammer as Beast and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. Channing Tatum, who debuted as Gambit in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ also stays on.

That setup creates an interesting contrast. Audiences will see the Fox-era X-Men in December, and then a new generation take over. It’s an unusual way to transition a franchise, and it raises questions about how the two groups relate.

Casting reports tend to accelerate as production nears. The film is reportedly targeting a 2027 start, which means the studio needs its major roles locked in well before cameras roll. An almost-complete cast would be consistent with that schedule.

It would also give Marvel material for its marketing calendar. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opening on December 18, the studio may prefer to announce additional mutants after that film has had its moment. A reveal at a convention or in a trailer would build excitement.

The biggest unanswered question is Wolverine. Hugh Jackman has reprised the role in the MCU, and a new actor would take on one of the most famous characters in superhero history. Magneto and Mystique are also major decisions, especially with McKellen and Romijn appearing in ‘Doomsday.’

Until Marvel confirms more names, the rumors will continue to swirl. For now, the best approach is to treat each claim carefully and wait for official announcements.

Which unconfirmed mutant are you most eager to see cast in Marvel’s new 'X-Men' film?
