Few press tours show off two sides of an actress as clearly as the ‘Street Fighter’ run has for Callina Liang. One week she’s posting bruised, scraped set photos as Chun-Li, and the next she’s turning up in polished, camera-ready looks. Her latest Instagram photos continue that contrast.

Liang, a Canadian-Chinese actress, plays the legendary World Warrior in Legendary’s live-action ‘Street Fighter,’ directed by Kitao Sakurai. The cast includes Andrew Koji, Jason Momoa and Orville Peck, with Noah Centineo as Ken. The film opened in theaters on October 16, and Liang has been one of the campaign’s most visible faces.

That visibility is what makes her newest posts stand out. Fresh Instagram images of Liang are circulating again, and they show a very different mood from the fight-ready Chun-Li fans have seen on screen.

In one frame, Liang wears a black top with buckled side detail, posed against sheer curtains with her long dark hair falling loose. In another, she sits in a vehicle in a black distressed top and light-wash denim, with a soft, smoky eye look. The styling feels relaxed and editorial, rather than action-hero.

The glamorous styling is a deliberate contrast to the gritty Chun-Li on screen, and it has been a pattern throughout her press appearances. Earlier posts included a red satin gown on a balcony set against stone buildings and a bright blue sky, as well as a powder-blue lace-trimmed set.

Liang’s rise has been quick. She was noted as one of the breakouts of Sundance 2024 for her leading role opposite Lucy Liu in Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Presence,’ playing Chloe, a troubled teenager living in a haunted suburban home. She also starred in ‘Bad Genius,’ appeared on Apple TV+’s ‘Foundation’ and was a series regular on ITVX’s ‘Tell Me Everything.’

She was cast as Chun-Li in June 2025. For a franchise with global recognition, her bilingual skills in English and Mandarin and her martial arts background in wushu and silat were seen as an asset.

The polished photos hide a punishing preparation. Liang has said she trained 2 hours a day in Taekwondo, Muay Thai and wushu, along with leg strength work. She also downloaded the ‘Street Fighter’ games onto a PlayStation 5, recorded Chun-Li’s attacks in slow motion and studied the footage to reproduce them in the fight choreography.

Her set photos tell the same story. She has shared images of herself in Chun-Li’s blue qipao-style costume, spiked wristbands and signature hair buns, with the outfit torn and dirty and bruising makeup in place. She joked on Instagram that she didn’t have time to photoshop, a blunt reply to the heavy scrutiny that comes with a role like this.

Callina Liang Says Her Brutal ‘Street Fighter’ Leg Training Has Become a Permanent Habit

The promotional campaign has been one of the busiest of the season, with trailers, arcade booths, fashion collaborations and cast photocalls. Liang has appeared at the Los Angeles premiere and the Mexico City photocall, and she joined her castmates at the SiriusXM Studios for a WWE Radio Front Row session. She has also landed a ‘Behind The Blinds’ cover as the film turns her into a breakout star.

Each look seems designed to prove she can move between worlds. It’s a smart way to keep attention on both the movie and the actress as the film continues its theatrical run.

Liang has already hinted at her next goal. She told Variety she is a huge gamer who has put 100 hours into ‘Dead by Daylight’ over the last two months. After learning that Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are making a movie of the game, she says she wants to star in it.

It’s a fitting ambition for an actress who prepared for ‘Street Fighter’ by studying the game itself. If she lands the role, gamers could see her take on another franchise that she clearly loves.
