Procedural dramas rarely get to surprise you, which is why ‘FBI‘ leaning into a story about one of its own agents lands with some weight. The CBS staple has spent its ninth season carrying the fallout of OA’s undercover work, and that emotional weight set the tone for the latest hour.

OA’s unsanctioned assignment wrapped up the week before with the arrest of Anna Vorpe, which meant the team could finally breathe. ‘Reticence’ was the first chance to see how that operation had changed him once he was back on the job.

The case began when a man fleeing a crime scene stole a car, unaware that a six-month-old baby was asleep in the backseat. The baby’s mother, Jennifer, called for help and remembered the thief was covered in blood.

The team found a blood sample on a nearby fence and traced it to the murder of a woman named Amanda Murray. The DNA matched Maggie’s new partner, Isaiah Green, and Amanda turned out to be his ex-girlfriend.

ADIC Green was shocked to learn his nephew was connected to the case, but told the team to treat Isaiah like any other suspect. It was the daunting conclusion the official synopsis had teased, that the suspect might be one of their own.

Searching his house, the team found antidepressants and learned that Isaiah has bipolar disorder. He had stopped taking his medication for the last month because it made his hands shake and he feared he couldn’t safely carry a weapon in the field.

Isaiah was in the middle of a manic episode following a recent diagnosis, and his memory was foggy. All he could recall was the smell of hibiscus flowers, a laptop and flames. Maggie stood by her partner even as the evidence piled up.

He had also been investigating Amanda’s death himself to prove his innocence. His recollection that Amanda had been frightened by something at work became the breakthrough that cracked the case.

The murders were work- and money-related, tied to a rocket company on the verge of going public. According to a recap, a design flaw in the rockets threatened to wreck the company’s chances, and security employee Dale shot the CEO before trying to flee after killing Amanda and a colleague named Cory to keep the flaw buried.

Isaiah’s name was cleared, but the baby was still missing. Isaiah even escaped hospital custody to look for him, heading to a park where he thought he’d left the child.

ADIC Green worked out where the baby was. Isaiah had taken him to a daycare he used to attend, run by a woman named Rubi who had hibiscus flowers outside her home, and he had left him there to keep him safe while he hunted for Amanda’s killer. The baby was reunited with his parents.

The final scene belongs to the family. Isaiah accepted that he needed help, and his uncle promised to make sure he got it. Writers told TV Insider they wanted the audience to meet Isaiah’s skills and his bond with Maggie first before the reveal, while actor Roland Buck III said the goal was remembering that “this is someone’s son.”

Hidden Remote framed the episode as Isaiah’s exit, and his future is open. The writers would only say they couldn’t confirm or deny a return, but never say never.

The other thread running through the hour was OA. He wasn’t sleeping, his girlfriend Zara noticed, and he refused to promise the family they’d find the baby after being unable to save the last person he’d vowed to protect.

Maggie picked up on the shift immediately, but OA stayed tight-lipped about what he went through with Anna’s strike team. Zara believed he was opening up, which made the gap between him and Maggie more painful.

With OA keeping secrets and Maggie’s two partners both unreadable in one episode, the show has set up a more uneasy partnership. The writers say the duo will still have laughs, but things will be “a little bit kinetic” this year.

Did FBI Season 9, Episode 4, “Reticence,” handle Isaiah’s storyline well?
