Original ‘X-Men’ Cast Reportedly Returning for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’: Is This the Final Farewell?
Few corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been teased, debated and rumored about as much as the arrival of Fox’s mutants. Years after the original ‘X-Men‘ team last shared the screen, the studio’s Multiverse Saga is steering toward a crossover that could bring the whole gang back together.
That anticipation has only grown as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ approaches its December 18, 2026 release date. The follow-up, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, is set to arrive on December 17, 2027.
Now a fresh rumor says the story of those mutants may stretch even further. According to a new insider report, the original ‘X-Men’ will return in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. Little else is known beyond that, and even that remains a rumor for now.

Marvel has already confirmed that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will feature several members of the team. Patrick Stewart returns as Charles Xavier and Ian McKellen as Magneto, alongside Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and James Marsden as Cyclops. Kelsey Grammer and Rebecca Romijn also return, and Channing Tatum’s Gambit joins them.
The trailer for ‘Doomsday’ even pans over a ruined X-Mansion, hinting that the mutants’ return will not be a quiet reunion. It marks the first time McKellen has played Magneto since ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.
Not every familiar face appears on that list. Halle Berry’s Storm and Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey were notable exceptions, though one rumor has suggested Marvel is saving characters like Storm and Jean Grey for the Multiverse Saga’s big finale.
The latest report suggests the full original team could come back together in the saga’s finale. That lines up with earlier claims that the mutants would carry over from ‘Doomsday’ into ‘Secret Wars’. Still, the report does not reveal what any of them would be doing.
It also arrives alongside a separate claim. Some reports had pegged ‘Doomsday’ as the final MCU appearance for the veteran X-Men actors, but another scooper insisted Stewart and McKellen will return as Professor X and Magneto in ‘Secret Wars’ anyway.
There’s a sliver of precedent for a bigger role too. Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 ‘Secret Wars’ comic prominently featured the X-Men on Battleworld, and one insider has claimed the X-Men material in the film is bigger than most people expect, and not just cameos.
The timing here matters. Marvel boss Kevin Feige has said the company will recast the mutants for its upcoming ‘X-Men’ movie, directed by Jake Schreier, after the events of ‘Secret Wars’. He avoided calling that a reboot and instead described ‘Secret Wars’ as a reset for the MCU.
That makes a ‘Secret Wars’ appearance look less like a victory lap and more like a handoff, with the old guard bowing out as a new generation steps in. A report also claims the cast of that new film is almost complete, and the project is slated for 2028. The more cynical read is that a large-scale showdown could end badly for the team, with many assuming the two Avengers films could claim the lives of countless heroes.
Marvel Studios has not confirmed which X-Men characters will appear in ‘Secret Wars’, and the studio has kept details tightly under wraps.
The conversation doesn’t stop at the original lineup. Months ago, a rumor claimed some ‘X-Men: First Class’ actors could return for ‘Secret Wars’, naming James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult. No actor from that younger timeline has been officially announced for either Avengers film.
If that ever came true, it would put multiple generations of mutants in the same frame. It remains pure speculation for now.
Before any of that can happen, ‘Doomsday’ has to deliver. Marvel previously said Fox characters would keep appearing on the road to ‘Secret Wars’, so the studio has long been laying groundwork. How much of the rumor holds up will become clear once the first film arrives in theaters.
