Robert Downey Jr.’s Coffee Brand Puts Doctor Doom Front and Center in New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Art

Doctor Doom has been everywhere this fall. From fast-food menus to cinema lobbies, Marvel’s marketing machine has made sure that the villain of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is impossible to miss, and the promotional art keeps getting more elaborate.

Much of that visual identity leans on one color. Marvel has consistently bathed Doom in eerie green light, from countdown teasers set in his throne room to stained glass-inspired promotional art.

Now another striking piece of promotional art has surfaced, and it comes from an unexpected place. A new look at Doctor Doom shows the villain in an imposing pose surrounded by swirling green energy, and it belongs to happy, the coffee brand co-founded by Robert Downey Jr.

In the art, a gauntleted Doom reaches toward the viewer with the brand’s lowercase “happy” lettering floating over his outstretched hand. Below sits the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ logo and a reminder that the film opens in theaters on December 18.

The image ties into a partnership the brand announced earlier this month. Happy, which Downey co-founded with Craig Dubitsky, launched a collector’s edition line of ready-to-drink coffee in collaboration with Marvel Studios, playfully celebrating what it calls a “happy Doomsday.”

The setup is delightfully meta. Downey plays Doctor Doom in the film, and his own company is now selling cans that feature the character he plays.

The collaboration includes eight collectible can designs. They feature Black Panther, Captain America, Gambit, Mister Fantastic, Mystique, The Thing, Thor and, of course, Doctor Doom.

Each can holds 11 ounces of coffee, printed with high-resolution, tactile graphics. The flavors come from four of the brand’s most popular ready-to-drink options: classic and Tahitian vanilla cold brews, plus vanilla and chocolate chip lattes.

The lineup also mirrors the film’s crossover ambitions, mixing Avengers heroes with X-Men and Fantastic Four characters. It’s a neat snapshot of the multiverse-spanning cast that Marvel is promoting.

Happy is far from the only brand getting in on it. Dunkin’ has rolled out a limited-time ‘Doomsday’ menu, with six drinks, three bakery items and a tin, and says more announcements are coming at the top of November.

M&M’s has expanded its partnership with Marvel, and Hasbro and Funko have released new collectibles. Jack in the Box is teasing its own collaboration starring a Doom-inspired version of its mascot, while Williams F1 has revealed a black-and-green Doom livery.

One theory on why the marketing is so intense is that the studio wants the villain to feel inescapable. With so many partners coordinating across retail, food and sport, even a small art drop can become part of a bigger wave.

Fans have already begun combing the imagery for hints. Doom remains very mysterious despite the trailers and teasers released so far, and viewers are scouring any available material for secret cameos, possible deaths or details about his identity.

There’s also a persistent fan theory about the casting itself. ComicBook.com noted that the latest official description may support the idea that the casting is a red herring, partly because trailers have shown green eyes behind Doom’s mask while Downey’s eyes are brown.

That’s the sort of detail that keeps a campaign humming. Whether or not the theory holds up, the art keeps the conversation focused on who is really under the mask.

For Marvel, a collaboration featuring Downey’s own brand is something of a perfect fit. The actor returns to the MCU after seven years in a very different role than the one he left behind, now playing the primary antagonist of the Russo brothers’ film.

It also reflects how the marketing has shifted. Earlier teases focused on Steve Rogers, Thor and the X-Men, while Doom took center stage later and has since become the face of nearly every tie-in.
