Joe Russo Says ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Won’t Erase Steve Rogers’ ‘Endgame’ Ending, It Just Continues the Story

Few farewells in superhero cinema have been as beloved as Steve Rogers’ final scene in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. After returning the Infinity Stones, Captain America chose to remain in the past with Peggy Carter, and the moment became one of the most cherished closing beats in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That is exactly why the announcement that Chris Evans would return as Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ raised eyebrows. For many fans, the question was whether a comeback would undercut the happy ending the character had earned.

Now one of the film’s directors is addressing that concern head-on. Joe Russo says ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ gives fans a chance to see Steve Rogers’ story continue after ‘Endgame’ without taking anything away from what came before.

According to Russo’s comments to Fandango, he and his brother love the ‘Endgame’ ending as much as anybody. He stressed that the film will still exist as it is, and that there will always be that ending for Steve Rogers.

For those who want more, he framed ‘Doomsday’ as an option rather than a replacement. If you want to stay on the ride a little longer and enjoy the continuing saga, he said, the new film provides a fresh opportunity to launch into a new story.

It is a careful middle ground. The ‘Endgame’ ending stays untouched for viewers who cherish it, while ‘Doomsday’ invites everyone else to see what happens next.

The brothers have been consistent about their reasoning. Anthony Russo told Empire that they thought of that ending as “the perfect ending for Steve Rogers.” In a separate Fandango interview, he explained that they weren’t thinking about the story beyond ‘Endgame’ when they made it, and it wasn’t until years later that a road forward took shape.

Joe Russo has also said that continuing the character’s story and reuniting with Robert Downey Jr. felt like the right way for the directing duo to return to Marvel. The pair first worked with Evans on ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, then directed ‘Civil War’, ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’.

Anthony Russo has also confirmed that Steve has a central role in the new film, a notable detail for a hero who supposedly retired.

Evans himself needed convincing. Marvel reportedly pitched around a dozen ideas to him over the years, including versions where Steve operated as Nomad, but he turned them down to avoid undermining the emotional ending of the character’s arc.

What changed his mind was Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom, along with a new story idea from Joe Russo. It marks Evans’ first appearance as Steve Rogers since 2019.

Marvel went to some lengths to keep the casting quiet. Steve was reportedly referred to by the codename Luke Cage in scripts and on call sheets.

The first teaser for ‘Doomsday’ showed Steve returning home and cradling a child, ending with text confirming that Steve Rogers will return. Notably, the text did not say Captain America. Anthony Mackie, meanwhile, continues as the current Captain America of Earth-616.

That distinction matters. It suggests the story may be about Steve as a man rather than a symbol. Trailer descriptions from CinemaCon indicated that he has an extensive role in the crossover, including getting back in touch with Thor.

The ‘Endgame Encore’ re-release has also helped bridge the gap. It added four new scenes, including one where Loki interrupts Steve and Peggy’s fairy-tale ending, and Joe Russo has described revisiting ‘Endgame’ as required viewing for following ‘Doomsday’.

Not everyone is sold. There are legitimate concerns about Steve’s return after his ‘Endgame’ ending, and some commentators have worried it could dismantle that closure.

Still, one analysis argues there’s a reprieve in knowing the Russos are the ones behind it, since no other filmmakers have creatively directed the original Avenger’s story. Russo’s latest comments seem designed to reassure that crowd.
