Few new shows have made a simple family dinner feel as unsettling as ‘Phony‘. Hulu’s coming-of-age mystery from creator Nick Paley follows a teenager who wakes up after a car accident convinced his mother has been replaced by an impostor, and nobody else can see the difference.

The series stars Sam Nivola as Sonny Cooke and Connie Britton as his mother, Ellen, with Britton also serving as an executive producer. It premiered on October 20 with two episodes, and new episodes arrive every Tuesday through a finale on December 1.

The third installment, ‘Reverse Cuckoo Situation’, keeps the tension rising. Stuck at home with the woman he believes isn’t his mom, Sonny devises a trap designed to catch her in her lies, while Ellen reveals secrets of her own.

The setup is simple and uncomfortable. Sonny has been suspended from school after his behavior, so he’s forced to stay home. To make matters worse, Ellen decides to take a sick day and spend it with him.

Convinced Ellen is trapping him on purpose, Sonny calls his new private investigator, Sharla, for advice. Her guidance is to play nice for the day, which turns the episode into a kind of undercover mission.

His suspicion deepens when he overhears Ellen on a tense phone call. That’s all the motivation he needs to go on the offensive.

Sonny’s trap is a culinary one. He asks Ellen to make a specific childhood meal called “chicken nummers”, something the real Ellen would absolutely know how to cook. Ellen looks panicked at the request.

For a moment it seems she knows the recipe, special ingredient included. Then she slices her finger, and Sonny runs upstairs to find a first aid kit.

That’s when he finds the real clue. A journal sits on Ellen’s bed, open to the page that would have given her all the information she needed about the recipe and the childhood lore behind it. It’s the episode’s best evidence that the woman downstairs has been studying.

Ellen’s phone keeps ringing, and when Chloe shows up at the door, Ellen makes an excuse to leave, saying she’s going to urgent care. Chloe agrees with Sonny that Ellen is acting weird, though he still doesn’t fully tell her what he thinks is happening.

Sharla follows Ellen to a shopping center bank. There, Ellen hands a large stack of cash to a mystery man in a parking lot, and the two seem to know each other. He lights a cigarette for Ellen before leaving, and we learn that Ellen can now track Sonny with the new phone she got him.

The man disappears before Sharla can learn more. It’s an intriguing twist, because it suggests Ellen has her own secrets regardless of whether she’s an impostor.

Meanwhile, school is abuzz with rumors about a dead body in the woods. Word is that Shovel saw it, and the story spreads fast.

By coincidence, Ellen’s parking lot meeting happened at the same bar where the teachers were gathering for a night out. She’s invited to join them for a drink and picks up all the rumors.

Sonny hears the same news from Chloe. The pair decide to go to the “dead body party” at the lake, while Mallory and Chloe also grow closer.

Sonny knows Ellen can track him, so he turns off his phone’s location before heading to the party. The phone, however, never makes it out the door with him.

When Ellen returns home, she sees it ringing and answers. On the other end is Sharla, reporting back on Ellen’s bank trip. Ellen doesn’t get any specific information before the call ends, but the moment leaves a big cliffhanger.

It’s a clever reversal. Sonny set out to trap Ellen, only to leave her holding a line straight to his investigator.

The episode builds on a mystery that has been simmering since the premiere. Sonny’s belief grows from the slightly wrong face he sees on his mother and the missed secret shoulder squeeze at the school dance. Viewers see Britton’s face deliberately tweaked, a visual trick from the showrunners that puts the audience inside Sonny’s perspective.

The first episode also dropped hints that Sonny might not be imagining things, from a body dragged into a van in the woods to a beaver watching crimes at night. Online theories even question whether Sonny survived the crash at all.

With the dead-body rumor and Ellen’s cash drop now in play, the show is stacking questions faster than it answers them. Episode 4, ‘Vibes Are Rancid’, arrives on November 3.
