Spoilers ahead for the full episode. ‘NCIS‘ has never been shy about borrowing from pop culture, and the latest episode takes aim at online game shows and viral internet stars. Titled “Like and Subscribe”, it aired on CBS on October 27 and is available to stream on Paramount+. It pairs a twisty murder with a quieter story about Tony’s relationship with his daughter.

The case begins when a man’s body is found in the woods, killed with an axe and dressed in a Greatest American Hero costume under his clothes. The victim is Mark, an IT specialist and petty officer, and a briefcase of about $50,000 in cash turns up in his car. Kasie soon reveals most of that money is counterfeit, which makes the team wonder whether Mark was involved in something shady.

By the end of the hour, the team has traced the killing to the creators of the show that Mark was secretly appearing on, with a final twist involving a friendship gone sour. Meanwhile, Tony closes the episode with a small win on the home front. Here is how it all fits together.

Mark’s wife explains that their son is undergoing cancer treatment and that the medical bills had been piling up. A few weeks earlier, she says, her husband began paying them off using what he described as a Navy relief fund. Jimmy’s exam shows Mark was tied up for a long time and even had a scorpion in his stomach.

Those clues lead the team to the set of a Squid Game-style online show hosted by Jordan Jackpot. The show’s legal counsel, Chelsea, confirms that Mark was a contestant, and that all contestants sign NDAs, which explains why he never told his family. Torres finds a missing axe from the show’s axe-throwing set, and Jimmy confirms it is the murder weapon.

Suspects emerge, including contestants Rhonda, Jeff and Stephanie, who were all desperate for cash. Another contestant, Caleb, was kicked off after attacking Mark, but he explains the show deprived contestants of sleep and food to create better television. Mark later reached out to Caleb and offered to look into Jackpot.

Jackpot fights back by releasing a video claiming NCIS broke into his headquarters, then uses the raid as marketing. Tony meets with Jackpot, who films a video clearing the agency’s name. Tony then asks him to air-drop it, a move that secretly gives the team Jackpot’s authorization token to access a private, invite-only app that contestants had to use.

Kasie finds a user called The Hammer, who Mark was set to meet after flagging a bug he called illegal and dangerous. That user turns out to be Chelsea, who admits she met with Mark but says she wanted to fix the problem. The team points out the app was reportedly built by Russians, which would make it a national security concern, and she insists she did not know.

A video from Mark’s computer, recorded minutes before his death, leads agents to Jackpot’s office and a hidden safe. Inside is an old video showing that Jordan’s friend, Nathan, was the one who came up with the concept for Jackpot. When the app was sold, Nathan was set to be cut out entirely, and he finally cracks under questioning.

According to the recap, he recalls how Jordan never called him when his mother died, and says he planned to post the video to show the world the real Jordan. One review says the culprit is exactly who you would expect, the first person introduced on the show. The same review calls the idea that Chelsea killed Mark ridiculous, and says Jordan was mainly after money and willing to sell data.

The closing scenes tie the case back to Tony. After the case is closed, Knight drops in on Tony, who reveals he sorted things out with Tali. The pair came up with their own unique way to stay in touch without the need for texting, easing the distance he had felt since she started boarding school.

That plot had hit a snag earlier, when Jackpot’s marketing turned Tali against Tony because she is a fan of the YouTuber. She canceled a planned weekend trip to Washington, DC, and went quiet again. The resolution suggests the relationship is back on solid ground for now.

Jordan’s arc ends with a change of heart. He chooses not to launch the app, called Jackpot’s Choice, and instead uses the money to set up a fund for the contestants who were wronged. He then shows up at the hospital to cheer up kids, taking Mark’s place as the Greatest American Hero.

The Tali storyline has also raised hopes among fans that Tali, and perhaps her mother Ziva, could appear in the future. There are no plans announced so far, but the episode left the door open. Elsewhere this season, Torres has been dealing with his undercover past, and whether he returns to that world remains unanswered.

New episodes of ‘NCIS’ air on CBS on Tuesdays and stream on Paramount+. With the Tali thread resolved for now, expect the focus to shift back to the team’s cases and the shifting dynamics at headquarters.
